I like my Longacre. Lots of different cutters found on the internet. Most of them will do the job. The ones sold for aircraft use are pricey and overpriced for the average joe.
A good one is $50. You need to decide if it's worth it to cut used oil filters apart.

I always wonder about this, an average joe shmo like me even if they open a filter, what can they understand form it? Besides looking at structural integrity and as such?

I've been using the Harbor Freight pipe cutter for a few years now. Oil filter in the bench vise. Has other applications.

Angle grinder with a cutting wheel. 30 seconds later (including time to turn it a few times on the vice) and it's open.

Yup, and a dremel with a cutoff wheel works too, as does a hack saw, but they all leave metal flakes behind.
The filter openers with the cutting wheels do not leave any debris behind.
I wish Harbor Freight still had the No.3 exhaust cutter, I read that it worked great for most all filter sizes and was cheap.

Also the $50 cutter cannot cut the heavier screw on hydraulic filters like those in a Bobcat.
