Just wanted to see how many people replace their engine oil filter every other oil change?

I know some manufactures recommend replacement of the oil filter ever second oil change. I'm thinking I'm going to go this route myself and just wanted to feel out people opinions on the idea.

State of California Fleet Admin ran tests back in the 1980's and determined that the most cost effective solution was to change the oil at 6,000 and the filter every other time. This is on a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles ...

Except for pursuit vehicles, they regularly run their fleet to 200,000 before auctioning them off. I've spoken to a lot of the Fleet field folks who say there are no reported oil related failures ... Our lubricants are much better nowadays than they were back then. So I have no issue following their general recommendations

And, there are some engineering papers that point out that engines react with oil to make anti-wear compounds unique to that engine and it's general operating environment (heat cycles and load cycles). These papers are available over in "Interesting Articles" forum. The consensus is to retain 10% used oil to keep some of these formed compounds in play until the "new" oil has had a chance to react and create a new set.

Shannow is changing his filters a few weeks after changing the oil. I'm keeping my filters for at least a second change and then changing it a month after. By doing the Calif State thing you are getting 50% of the benefit of retained oil (every other change). So I'm sort of doing both now

This thread was interesting with strong opinions.

I change the oil at 5,000 miles and replace the filter every other oil change ... it isn't a cost issue, it is just my preference. I don't have any scientific proof that it is good or bad for the engine, but our Lexus doesn't seem to care. I used to use Toyota OEM and when the Fram Ultra came out, I switched over to it.

You will get a lot of opinions on this one ... I think only you can answer the question.

On the civic I change it every second OCI. On the Caravan I do it every OCI since it's under warranty. Once I use the three filters I have for the civic I'll switch to a fram ultra and change the filter every third OCI at around 15,000 km or I'll extend my OCI to 7500 km.

Guess you mean car manufacturers?
You have to decide if you run more than filter OEM recommends - some do - some don't - then plan your (1 or 2) OCI's ...

Apart from the first and/or second filter change on a new vehicle, modern filters, especially the better ones, are up to the task of every other oil change.

There are some really poor quality filters out there, even cheaper than the Orange Can of Death, and I'd certainly avoid any of those filters of un-known parentage.

I used a cheaper than jobber filter and changed before 3000 miles. Even the tech was skeptical but I assured him this wasnt the norm for me. I used a CQ filter that cost me .89 and the clerk warned me . The kicker...I used it with the left over Neo Synthetic 10w30 in my 1998 Sunfire and ran it 5000 miles lol. I lost my job right after grandma died and it was all I could afford. Looking back, I should have kept the Delco filter on a ran with it. This filter didnt even have a box, wrapped in plastic.

Point taken, again $10 for $10,000 damage.
It is not worth of gamble.

I wouldnt unless advised by mfr...although even then id have a hard time changing oil but not filter...I use a cheaper filter anyways..napa proselect for under 4$ here in canada..not worth me saving..i like 100% fresh oil!

As one of my friend said on this issue: I do not recall people taking shower in socks.

That's what Honda recommends and that's what I'm doing. I do use a good quality filter however, currently Wix.

I also use the cheapest name brand API SN 5W-20 oil I can find. I buy several changes worth at the same time. Changing the oil brand frequently is probably okay too but there's some reason (a myth maybe) to think that making an extended run on the same brand of oil is better.

I changed oil 48 times at quicklane and used pp 5w30 at the end with napa pro select and never had issue. I did change every 4k though in my 2012 Hyundai Accent GDi.

Yep that's kind of a little known fact, but in every honda manual i've seen it says oil filter every other oil change

Every oil change. Why change the oil and mix several oz of old oil(which you don't have to) with the new?

Read my signature.

On my car and truck I change the filter at every oil change. On my motorcycle I change it every other time. Though at 3k mile OCI's. Honda recommends 7500 mile OCI's.

Not true unless you go way past the recommended max oil filter change interval used in the EU or UK for the type of filter concerned (Might be worth using a long life filter in some cases).

I change oil every 15 K km after my UOA results indicated a 17K km OCI produced better results (Iron per km) than changing the oil every 10K km.
The recommended oil filter change interval on my old TDI is 20K km, BUT my engine is running very well AND no one at Volvo has ever heard of a filter blocking in under 30K km, so that is what I use as my FCI. The UOA results I get in the second filter use interval are a fraction better than the first use interval.

YEP, 2 for 1 is the way to go!

If you're changing at half the recommended frequency of the OEM - I wouldn't take issue with waiting till the next OCI to replace the filter.

Whereas, if you are running the full interval, I would be wary unless it was certain the filter manufacturer would warrant exceeding the OEM recommendations!
