oil filter recycling

I did a Google of "oil filter recycling NY" and it seems NY does not consider them hazardous waste, so toss them.

I have the $50 filter cutter and could cut most of them open but I assume it will wear out the cutting wheel on my filter cutter if I make it standard practice. The cut away steel can should be picked up like a tin can if I threw it in the recycling.

I have not seen where any places in NY take used oil filters. I see there are companies that process them, but assume its by the truckload. Not a few a year.

I keep my used filters in an old cat litter bucket with a tight lid on it. I store it under my work bench and when it gets full I take it to a local indy garage and dump the filters in their 55 gallon oil filter recycle drum. I believe American Filter takes them from there.

I take my oil and filters to Walmart, no problem or hassle, even in NY

This looks like it might be the new law in Cuomo-ville.

I cut them open, let everything drain out, then into the regular scrap it goes. No problems yet.

I take the used filters I am interested in cutting open to work and re deposit them in the filter dumpster. Oil Filter Recycling takes and empties our dumpster.

Think about the lion king. Metal came from the earth. The trash goes back into the earth. So in a way, you are recycling everytime you throw a used filter in the trash.

In all seriousness, the earth is currently being destroyed by:
-Nuclear power plants spewing Cesium, Strontium, Tritium and Iodine into the air and water (Fukushima Daichi, Chernobyl, etc.)
-Ground water being contaminated through industrial oil practices
-The entire country of China...

I am a huge proponent of recycling and responsible use of natural resources, but I dont think you have much to worry about. If the planet goes kaput, it wont be because of your oil filter!

I leave them on top of the main recycling bin along with recycled oil; no big deal; tho' I put them out shortly before pick-up rather than leaving them out all night lest some wind or rascal tips things over.
