How can one tell if there filter is plugged?
I think if a filter gets plugged it will go on bypass mode, right?
If so, is there a way to tell?

OR

Do most good filter not need replacing?

You don't tell.
If the engine or filter has a bypass, it will!

An oil filter should be changed per the owners manuals recommendations, which is usually at every or 2nd oil change.

As far as being able to tell if one's oil filter is plugged, I imagine you would note a pressure drop equalivalent to the initial opening setting of the filter's bypass valve. This would most noteably be when the oil has warmed up and thus better able to bleed out through all the bearing clearences. I say this in theory.

Another thing that can cause pressure drop however is the shearing of the oil, which can thin it out of grade. A UAO would probably help determin both with its viscosity test and number of insoluables. Either way, as a precaution I'd follow along the lines of manufacturer recommendations and what other's experiments have proved - but take it with a grain of salt as not all operating conditions state of repair are the same.

There's been a bit of experimentation to see flow restrictions caused by oil filters here, and there has been much discussion of possible bypass valve intervention. Use the search feature to see what pops up "filter testing", etc.

And as far as filters needing replacement...it's only a matter of time before things plug-up, or worse if you've seen some of the filter pics that show medium deterioration, which I hope is a very very small percentage. It's cheap insurance not to push things too far - "but than again what is that condition exactly," I suppose you ponder.

Does a filter actully ever get plugged on a healthy engine? I mean to plug up a filter you would have a whole bunch of stuff in the engine, I cant see that much stuff in there unless you got something wearing out (camshaft?)or someone dumped a handfull of sand into the oil.

I agree! I would think that most filters could easily go 10,000 miles before they even started adding more pressure increase from restriction. For a 3,000 mile changer, filter changes every other oil change would be doable IMO; I've actually done it several times.

I change my filter with every oil change.
My dad-in-law runs Amsoil and goes (I think) 20,000+mi.
He doesn't change the filter inbetween oil changes.
Should he (or anyone) change the filter if they run their oil that long?

How long does it take for pops-in-law to accumulate 20K?

I buy mid-tier Motorcraft/AC Delco filters that never see beyond 5K with my synthetic Castrol/Mobil-1. Doing so keeps the oil cleaner... to me worth $3.99 for the filter & half-quart of top-off oil to re-fill the filter between oil changes.
