After many years of changing the filter on my car with each year having to use a wrench to just get the filter on (never did spin on easily as most filters do) this year I am pumping oil all over my garage floor doto the gasket not seating. A gusher, cleans out the crankcase in 5-10 seconds yes, the old gasket has been removed but it appears that it has cross threaded somehow and when tight it still does not seat with the housing. A mess. cannot seem to get it started without crossthreading.

Yes, I have been changing my own oil for 20+ years and never had an issue similar to this one.

Question, can oil filter housings be replaced and/or can the nipple be re threaded with the proper die? Will have to have it towed to mechanic ( unfortunately not on a ramp so I cannot really get underneath to see what is going on and I do not have a proper jack and stands to take a look either.

I had this problem since purchased used 9 years ago but until this year the filter always held even if it had to be sort of forced on.

So, what are the options with a cross threaded oil filter housing?

What kind of car is this? On my truck there is a threaded fitting that has a 1 inch hex nut in the middle. It has threads on one end of the nut to screw on to the oil filter and threads on the other end to go through the base plate adapter and rubber sealing gasket that fits over the filter mounting boss and screws into the side of the block. I discovered it by accident when the fitting came off with the filter when I did an oil change. Since then I tighten it every time with a socket to be sure it is still secure.

Maybe your vehicle has a similar fitting? Need to get under it and see what you have there.

The threaded nipple on many of them can be unscrewed and replaced with a new one. Otherwise you have to get the new assembly, but the nipple should come off. I have seen numerous ways to unscrew them but some type of larger easy out should work...unless you can grab it with a set of channel locks. I would lightly heat the nipple but be very careful doing so.

Also, sounds like it is time for you to invest in a heavy duty floor jack and some HD jack stands.

Put some red loctite on it and it won't unscrew.

If your having a hard time getting at the filter, such as our corolla's, then I would see if you can chase the threads then install a remote mount kit. Would elimnate the need to replace and make subsequent filter changes a snap.

Not sure if you can get a cheap die in that size and then have enough room to work with it.

This is very common. Engines are bolted together with many parts, not machined out of a single piece.
If you get all the oil off of the parts, you can use LockTite to keep the threaded piece in there.
BTW, these rarely come loose or leak - good thing you saw yours leaking and tightened it.
