Recently purchased a 2003 Mazda 6 for my Baby Girls college graduation. It is equipped the 4 cyl VVT engine, maybe like 2.3 or 2.6L. Anyway went to the Auto Parts store this afternoon to get oil filters and they did not show a listing nor an application.

So, should I go to the dealer or does some one out there have a cross reference. I normally use Wix, Federated, or (I hate to admit it) Fram.

The car now has about 600 miles on it so I would like to get the break in oil out of it. Also, I will be running Mobil 1 5w30, owners manual says SL 5w-20 but that seems real thin to me. I know Mobil 1 5w30 is real thin I am thinking with the warmer temps in this area of the country I should be OK.

Opinions!

An interesting puzzle. Or more specifically, a Mazda filter enigma wrapped in a riddle. The fairly comprehensive Autozone.com website essentially lists "Not Yet Available" for all their Purolator, AC, Fram, STP, Mobil 1, and Bosch products. Same response at the Napa Auto website (aka Wix filters).

Either your filter is unique in some way, or perhaps an existing, cross-referenced filter might fit, but not have a proper feature of some sort (bypass setting, anti-drainback feature, other)...? Personally, I would not cross-reference for that car. There may be some unique need you're not aware of, such as the bypass/drainback features just mentioned. For now, I'd just purchase from the Mazda dealer. Soon enough, the aftermarket crowd will offer something for ya.

As for the oil, there's folks on these boards who are oil gurus, and you should give 'em a listen. That said, I suggest you can safely use absolutely any weight available to you....so long as it's precisely what the owner's manual calls for. For two reasons: 1) You have warranty compliance to worry about; and 2) The Mazda engineers most certainly know what they're talkin' about -- stick with whatever they stipulate for your modern, complex, and warrantied 2003 engine.

There is a massive mazda6club on the net. PM me for the url.

The 6i's uses a cartiage filter that is currently ONLY available from the dealer. Just pickup a few at once to save some money. They'll give you some filters, gaskets, and rubber seals.

The 6s uses the motorcraft FL820-S which has a very large amount of replacement filters available.

Both engines call for 5w-20 oils which fullfil the FORD specifications.

You can use 5w30 (as per the released TSB) but most individuals notice a performance loss from doing so.

Awesome, Crossbow. It's great when someone with first-hand knowledge of a given model pops up.

If there's a cartridge is involved, there's a simple piece of advice I can offer "Twentynine" since the BMW I once owned had this arrangement as well. When you change the filter the first time, save all the old rubber o-rings, gaskets, washers, etc., and store them in a ziplock bag. If you ever manage to damage a new o-ring/gasket, receive a defective one, or even get an improperly sized one like I once did, you can always reach into the bag and use an old one -- they're typically perfectly usable even though a bit used.

Whats the date and number for the 5w30 TSB?

Purolator lists a part number.

Undummy,

I'll go and dig up the TSB.

TSB was on...

TSB #01-003/02
Issued 02/06/2002
Recommended Engine Oil
Applicable Models: 2001-2002 Tribute
Oil Viscosity: 5W-20* OR 5w30

Which uses the same 3.0L duratec block. (But slightly different internals)

Seems this was exaggerated on the mazda forum to include other models. (So i retract my comment about the TSB on 5w30 on the Mazda6s)

On-line stores using Worldpac catalog all carry filters for Mazda 6i. Search for part #A6000-121022. The cost is around $4.50 and, as far as I can tell, it's the OEM filter.

For example, look at europeanautomotive.com or ips-parts.com.

Purchased a filter from the Mazda Dealer. Funny looking little thing, filter cost $6.75 but the o-rings cost another $6. Bought from the dealer this time because I needed it this weekend. Next time I will try ordering from the places listed in this link.
Thanks Guys.
