I have a 2005 Mazda 3 with the 2.3 engine. The oil filter is the canister type, with a removable filter inside a plastic housing, not a spin on type. The 2.0 engine has the spin on type of filter. Some owners of the 2.3 have done a conversion by using the oil filter housing from the 2.0 and putting it on the 2.3 By dong this they are now able to use a spin on filter. Anybody see a problem that may cause an engine failure or any other problems. If the oil filter change is not done properly an oil leak could develop because of a cracked plastic housing caused by over thighning the bolt that holds it on or just not fitting properly, that is why some have done the converstion. The canister type of filter takes me back to the 50s. Why they used plastic I will never understand. I am no expert but I see no problem.

If you do the filter changes yourself, you won't crack the plastic housing or strip the bolt. No need to worry.

Its when you take it to a quick lube shop and they damage it. If I had your car I would just convert it and then use an oversized oil filter.

Ford uses the same engine on the 2.3 Focus and the 2.3 DOHC Ranger. You might look at the filter mounting parts and see if you can use them.

I would use the OEM setup and not torque on the bolt like a gorilla and you should be just fine and dandy.

Kiss your 5 year 50,000 mile warranty good bye. If you get a fliter cup you will not crack it. that is what we use at the mazda dealership i work at.

Also same as on the Escape. Very, very easy change.

Purolator cheapo filters are OK. The expensive Pureones have collapsed. I sent the filter to Purolater and they say that it was not failed. Who are they kidding!

Stick with ANY filter other then Pureone on the 2.3!

There is no problem with doing the conversion. Just make sure you save your old parts in case you want to switch back.

As you can see in my sig, I also own a Mazda3 with the 2.3L. At 10K miles, I took off the cartridge housing and replaced it with the spin-on housing from the 2.0L (which is the same block). I'm now at 26K miles with ZERO issues. I prefer it over the cartridge filter. Plus, I can run an oversized filter.
