Oil Filter for a Honda Civic?

I have a 2004 Honda civic. When my first oil change came up I put in the standard "Honda filter" but what made me question which filter to use, was once the oil drained out of the old filter so that I could dispose it properly, I noticed that there were pieces of the filter poking through the Center column of the filter. It wasn't even a piece here and there, it look like a **** birds nest was being pushed through the center ring. After my next oil change I look into that filter and saw the same thing. So at that point I decided to run Bosch Premium filters, but to my dismay after moving to a new apartment I cannot find a local vender that has the Bosch Premium filters. So I have sadly installed a Honda filter, but this time I made sure that the filter was in the USA and not in Canada (The first two were) has anyone else had this issue? Or a recommendation for a replacement filter?

are you refering to the new "skinny" type filter? i changed mine but did not noticed anything wrong. maybe you shall talk to the Honda dealer, this shall not be happening.

you cant go wrong with anything from purolator, the premium plus and pureone are both quality. napa gold's are good as well. ive used both pureones and napa gold filters on my 03 civic.

i refuse to use honda filters after putting one on a friends car. i was buying oil at honda, so i figure why not buy the filter as well, one stop. when putting the filter on, the gasket didnt stop the filter from turning, the only way it stopped was when the base plate made contact with the filter mount. i over-tightend the filter obviously, but it didnt feel right leaving the filter on there being as loose as it was after the gasket making contact, and going 3/4 turn more.

I don't know if this will be of any consolation, but the fact of the matter is you can use any one of several real good brands. Wix Baldwin,NAPA, Purolator makes excellent filters. Honda's new filter, the 15400 plm-A02 is oem'd by FRAM to Honda specifications. You can of course get the FRAM PH-7317. AC Delco PF 2057 is also good and made by Champion Labs as is the WalMart SuperTech ST7317. The WalMart SuperTech brand I bought for 2.07. They seem not to restock these once they are gone. I wiped out one WalMart's store's total supply and looked in 4 other stores with no luck. You can also get FRAM's PH 7317's on periodic sales @ 2.99.

Off topic but hopefully related; you also might want to get oils that have a lot of moly, such as the 5w20 Honda brand (pricey) , Exxon Superflo, Castro GTX,Chevron Supreme, Motorcraft. Pennzoil, Havoline. Most and any of these oil periodically go on special, so you can pretty much buy any of these on price and/or just plain preference. After the recommended so called "break in oil" I will run Mobil 1 0w-20, synthetic PAO group IV, which has an almost hidden advantage of getting app .5-1 mpg better than the conventional 5w20's. Over 30k miles the fuel savings can actually make using conventional oil more expensive to use.

im not sure honda has all the moly it use to, people say it is now a much lighter color than before
