Will using a different brand of oil filter[Amsoil] void a GM warranty? I assume Gm would have to prove the oil filter was at fault?

Yank, what will render a warranty void is using a filter that's not specified for that engine--the brand doesn't matter as long as that brand says that this is the correct filter to meet the manufacturer's requirements for that engine.

We know the act applies to parts (ie. if you use another brand they can't voisd the warranty unless it is proved that the part caused the problem) can or does this apply to oil? They say must use API SJ/SL 5W30 change at 5000 miles. Can a non approved different weight and longer interval oil be used and still be protected under the magnuson moss act? Wonder about Ontario Canada's New Vehicle Warranty act?
Yes, BUT!!! The manufacturer will claim that the oil was the cause of the failure due to it not being API certified and the oil manufacturer will claim that it is an engine defect Bottom line is you will win in court assuming the oil did not cause the failure ( oil rarely does if ever cause failure) but for the 1-3 years you are battling the manufacturer you will be out a car. If warranty is an issue with yo use only the API oils and correct weight and save all receipts.
