Oil Extractor

For those of you that likes to get (almost) every drop of used oil out of your car. An oil extractor will help.

After letting the oil out of the drain hole for about 20 minutes. I put the oil extractor down the dip stick hole and got over half a cup of oil from the bottom of the oil pan. The longer you wait the more you get, until you reach the point of diminishing return.
 
I have one of the Pela.

I was a little skeptic at first that the extractor might not get as much oil out as opening the drain plug. I guess from the design of the oil pan in my Civic there is a lot more oil left. And you'll never see those agonizing slow drips from your drain hole again that can last for hours.

For my next oil change, I won't even bother to open the drain plug.
 
You need to do the oil just warm. Too cold and it will flow really slow. Too hat and you might overheat the dipstick tube. I bought 2 extra because they do get lil nicks in them. Cheap, like $4. I just did a TOYOTA yesterday, it got all the oil, pulled the plug and zero came out. Same with Volvo and the Audis.

ha, I haven't yet since I bought my Mazda 2 years ago.

There was 1 false indicated UOA, which I believe was caused by me not washing out the Mityvac thoroughly. But a retest from the same fountain by Terry confirmed all was fine.
My MityVac does as good a job as any human can do & with no fuss or muss.

The extraction tube from the Pela is some what heat resisting. Just run the engine for 10 min to get it warm and all containments suspended in oil then extract.
 
10 minutes may not be enough to burn off the extra fuel that gets dumped into the engine while it is warming up. If you see fuel dillution in your UOA, you won't know whether it's due to insufficient warmup before sampling or due to faulty fuel injectors for example.
 
Although that thing looks great, I got it done a lot cheaper. A few years ago, I went to my local boat dealers parts department, and purchased a pump that in placed on my hand drill. Then all I do is run the tube down the dipstick hole, and another tube into a bottle, then turn on the hand drill. Does a great job of pumping the oil out. I use the same device to pump out ATF. Also, I once had a problem with water filling up a space in my home A/C, and used it to pump out 21 gallons of water. (wow). Don't remember how much this thing cost, but it was about $10 or $12 if memory serves me correct.

You guys are correct about trying to pump out oil when that oil is very hot. It tends to "Melt" or "chew up" the end in the oil. I now do it when the oil has cooled down quite a bit, or like you said, run the engine for a short time, just to warm up the oil, but not enough to get it hot.

BTW, a friend of mine in the Motorcycle Repair Business was the one who gave me this tip a few years ago.
