i usually buy my oil at WM and bring it to oriellys for disposal. some times feel bad doing so.

Do places that take old oil get paid by companies for the old oil, or do they have to pay to dispose of it?

Yeah, when I had a bigger hobby shop, I kept my used oil in drums.

A local oil company would give me a hundred bucks or so for a full drum, and remove it for me for free.

40 or 50 gallons of used oil is a commodity. A few gallons is a nuisance.

I have a local garage/body shop that welcomes me with open arms when I bring 10 gallons to them. They burn it in the winter to heat their facility.

Exactly where mine goes.

They even pick it up, and leave me an empty 5 gallon bucket as well.

They don't care what it is... engine oil, hydraulic fluid, gear oil, diesel fuel... even with small amounts of stale gasoline mixed in. Just as long as it isn't contaminated with coolant.

They still sell recycled oil in Ghana.

They used to sell it in the UK about 20 years ago in small car parts shops.

Never used it myself.

In UK or Ghana as i suspect only contaminants are removed and additives not replaced.

I suppose it has its place in vehicles that burn a lot of oil.

Which in my experience of Ghana is a fair few.

A recycler picks mine up whenever I have ten gallons or more....I don't charge for it though.

I used to use recycled oil in a Corvair I had....I found the heater didn't stink as bad with recycled oil as it did with the "good" stuff. Depending on the length of my drive, a blue haze would develop inside due to the oil in the heat exchangers.

I know the shops have to pay to have the used oil picked up.
when I was at AZ we were supposed to give the customers 4 cents a quart for their oil.
BUT AZ had to pay for the oil pickup as well.
then Asbury sold the oil to refiners and it was used for the ships.

Around here, several shops have waste oil heaters for winter.

By early November, they are VERY HAPPY to take on all the oil you can give them. I usually roll in with no less than 15 gallons when we dispose, and they are all smiles about it.

I guess in that sense, they are getting the direct benefit of the used oil vs. comparable gas/oil/electric heat fuels.

Are you a mechanic shop or auto parts retailer?

Also, what about all of the other fluids, like:

brake fluid

coolant

transmission fluid

Who collects them (for free)?

I knew someone who simply put the jugs of the used fluids in the back making them think its oil since they told them that they don't take anything else but oil.

There is a program in CA where if you do a bunch of paperwork as a shop, you get like $.04 a quart to recycle oil. We have the forms, but when customers come in they just want to drop off the oil and not fill the forms out.
