I have a 2004 Buick Park Ave (3.8) that got 3 or so months ago. I bought Valvoline Restore and Protect oil to hopefully clean the motor. I tried to take the drain plug off but could not. The P.O. had a place close to my work do it and its a oil change place. Had my own filter (AC Delco) and new drain plug also. Will see how it will do. My 1st time there and hopefully only time. They asked if i wanted something put in to clean the motor. No i said. The oil suppose to do this. I also kept the old filter and drain plug it was rounded. I plan to change the filter in 500 or so miles.

I say run it till it gets really black.
Did that in my truck. I was going to run R&P for 500 miles but after 500 it was just really dark yellow, as if it was only melting varnish. Then after 500 miles, which took 5 weeks or so it started to rapidly black out. Changed it at 1,200 and it appeared to be worse than 6,000 mile PP in my wife's car.
Idk if time or miles that will do it.

I cut the fitler open and in the filter part(metal) and had some metal? in there. Thats what looked like to me. On the pleats or whatever looked good and one place had sledge or what looked like

That's one of the all time great engines.
It was the right engine at the right time and in the right vehicle(s).
The 3.8L pushrod engine was as good as any V6 OHC 4V/cyl from Japan at that time.
It made good power & torque and got good MPG.
I know that the 3800 was also in the Camaro/Firebird too but the best chassis for it was the large sedans.
They(engine/chassis) were just perfect for one another.
