I paid 49.95 today for a full synthetic oil change at a Chevrolet dealership. first oil change in my 2014 Chevy cruze eco with 1.4 liter turbo. starting temps in Michigan this year are currently at or near zero. what synthetic oil do you think I got? I know they used to use Mobil 1 but I could never really see it on the stick. This oil is clean but much thicker almost green in color. Did I get the GM Dexo? I hate having dealership oil changes . At least at a quick lube I can watch them dump in whatever oil I bought.

Whatever they used, I am sure it is Dexos approved. I think all the GM vehicles require it now. You could ask the dealer what brand of oil they use but not all dealers are willing to say.

You can go back into the GM shop and watch them work on your vehicle, too.

It's your vehicle and your money.

They might not want you to go in there, but they can't stop you either.

They can, and probably will, stop you. It is their private property and their liability if you get hurt while back there.

They won't cover Full Synthetic anyway so I paid full price less 10 bucks and then at 8000 miles I will get it for free with the rotation of tires . I get 4 free within 24000 miles

For a full synthetic a good deal. Hope it is, for that price I would question if it was a semi from a dealer. May also want to consider a 0 W XX where you live

Part # should be on the invoice. If the number is 19393000-19293002 it is dexos. If it is not then it is likely mobil 1 5w30.

Uh... no. They are a business and you a paying customer. Businesses pay business insurance premiums for such risks. If they don't want you back there, run, don't walk, to another establishment. They are hiding something.

My dealers walk me back into their garage after buying cars to meet the service manager...right into the bay.

Giving you a courtesy tour of the service department after buying a car and standing there during a service or maintenance event to observe are two different things. If you got a dealer service department that is letting you stand around and watch them, then you are super duper special and have a super duper dealer because that is not the norm.

As mentioned, there is way too much liability and insurance costs to allow a customer to be sipping their pumpkin spiced latte and eating Cheetos watching his car get get worked on only feet in front of them.

While ownership of a vehicle that is dropped off for service may give someone a sense of entitlement to watch every move a service tech does, that is masking a bigger issue of trust. If you really cannot trust a dealership to be working on your car out of your sight, then you might want to be looking at turning your own wrench on your car.

I didn't say "latte and Cheetos" "feet away". But walking into the service area isn't an issue. Interfering with the work would be. That is called a strawman, easily spotted.

OP you can certainly ask to see what oil is being put into your vehicle, and if they say No or "trust us" find someplace else.

Could be worse... my wife once paid $82 for a Syn-blend Castrol at Honda. $12 a qt... that is what happens when I am away on business.

Check the invoice... they have to list what they gave you. Otherwise you have their balls on a hook.

Yeah, if they are letting you hang out in the work area, they are taking a legal risk. I was family friends (three generations) with one shop owner so I would walk in and talk with him... unknown shops, I would wait until I was invited. Some people are stupid and do thing they should not do (air tools to tighten their non-ear piercings)... and some stupid people are a-wholes who sue people for their own stupidity.

There are good shops and there are bad shops... just like people. If you are getting a weird vibe, then follow your nose.

who knows.. you said you paid for synthetic but what they put in could have been anything thats why i cant wait until every state forces them to write what oil they use.

A GM Dealer would definitely use a Dexos oil in a vehicle that calls for it. Both of the local GM dealers by me use GulfTEC Dexos 5w30 and 5w20. They get the oils from the same distributor as we get our bulk. GulfTEC Dexos sells in bulk for under $10/gallon.

Just FYI, according to my manual the capacity of the 1.4 is 4.25qts. Guessing the dealer just rounds up or listed something standard on the invoice but you probably want to pull the dipstick and check the level if you didn't already.

FWIW, synthetic dealer change is $89.99 (or maybe $79.99) here.

Robert,

I'll bet if you asked for a full synthetic oil change most likely they use the standard GM part that they use on the Camaro SS which rewuires sythetic as standard. My wild guess is that you got Mobil 1 synthetic. Some dealerships will use which ever they contract to get but should be equivelent cuz if anything goes wrong then they have to honor the warranty. Now a days almost every synthetic oil is fast becoming DEXOS approved.

Durango

My local Chevy dealer has two bulk oil taps in the shop. One labeled 5w30 and the other 5w30 Dexos. Anything else needed is available in quarts or jugs. The only synthetic they stock is Mobil 1.
