Oil Catch cans

I've used them in both naturally aspirated and turboed cars. Here;s the latest drainings from my turbo. One can on each side. The oil on top came from the turbo side. It is just spliced in line with the valve cover breather tube to post filter intake.

The remaining watery gunk came from the PCV side where the can is inline between the PCV valve and the intake manifold.

Here's my passenger side one. The hose on the bottom is for easy draining.

And the drivers side one.

Did you make those catch cans or buy them?

They are the cheap $20 ebay ones. I take the kit and throw most of it away keeping the cans.

Shoz, please tell me that you do a lot of city driving.

I would have never expected to see so much water come from the oil. I guess it is all from condensation???

I need to install one on my 06 Scion tC to keep all that oil mist from going into the intake manifold.

I do a lot of rural 50 mph driving. What I've found over the years is the water is really dependent on the local humidity. Living in Illinois it's almost always above 50% and higher at night when I do most of my driving. One year going to California I barely collected anything.

This really help the valves from getting all carboned up. And I would say is required for any Direct Injected engine if you want longevity.

Did you ever think about getting a used oil analysis of that junk in your Catch Can?

Mostly water this time. The turbo side is just mist pushed out when under boost. It could go right back really. The other side has the combustion byproducts and water. This time I was really surprised because it did literally run out like water on the PCV side. Usually there is a lot of gasoline in it. But I did get different injectors and the car is quite happy with them.
