How could you tell If I just start the car after its gotten fully cold it doesn't smoke but if I immediately give it gas (hard) it does bit its usually just a little and its black and gray and smells like burnt fuel

let it idle when fully warm for about 15 minutes. Stand behind the vehicle, and have someone step on the gas while it is still in park: if you see a puff of smoke at this point it's probably valve seals.
Have someone follow you down the road going about 15-20 miles a hour-find a safe place of course-then floor it so it downshifts and shifts at max rpm-if you see smoke during this second routine, it's probably rings

It's a stick but I get what your saying . Would you believe me if I told you it never smokes? Wont smoke when driving or when sitting running. It does have a little oil on the plug threads not a lot but a little. It runs great to. And thanks I love quoting our founding fathers. That's not a direct quote but its close enough. I wish more people would listen to them.

Italian tuneup over the course of a few years lessened my oil consumption. was always using name brand 5 and 10w30 conventional and syn, and it eventually just got to the point it was consuming a lot less.

Does anyone have any opinions about using 5w30 and 10w40 I ask because it has a lot of viscosity improvers and thought maybe that would actually coke up the rings?

I don't know for sure, but I 'think' a modern 5w30 and 10W-40 would use close to the same amount of VII, so I don't think using 1 over the other will really make a difference.

If I were considering using a 10W-40 in an engine, I'd think about using a 15w40 HDEO. I personally feel most 15w40's are actually 10W-40's, as they often have very good cold-weather numbers. Plus a 15w40 has more additives to keep the engine clean.

In my 94 SL1, I used Delo 15w40 in the summer, mixed 50/50 with whatever else I had laying around. Went through around a quart every 800 miles or so. Car ran great, great MPG. I miss it!!
