I'm not a mechanic. I'm just a guy that likes to drive and occasionally try to fix problems with my vehicles.

I was told that the Meijer brand of fully synthetic was made by Mobil 1. I've tried to research it as best I could and haven't found any information to back that up. I even looked at the bottle at the store and it doesn't say who manufactured it. Does anyone know who makes the off-brand motor oils?

Does brand really matter, anyway?

Most of the major companies also make some private label oils and there are blenders you may not have heard of who also are big in the private label business such as Warren, Coastal, Pitt Penn and others. Sometimes a private label brand has multiple sources depending upon region or other factors.

The major makers claim that their private label offerings are not the same stuff as they sell under their own names.

In the end, who really knows? Personally I stick with major brands bought cheaply thanks to coupon sales, rebates, clearance sales, etc. Keep an eye on the rebates, sales and promotions section of BITOG to find these:

Welcome to the site, fellow Michigander. I've seen the Meijer oil as well, but i've never used it. It would be interesting to see who makes it.

I've done numerous searches and not found any information on it. I'm going to write them and ask... It can't hurt.

Brands, I don't think it really matters. It's just like a supermarket, why would anyone buy generic as opposed to branded items. Next time that you do your monthly grocery shopping, take a look at your shopping cart, are there more "house brand" as compared to "branded" items? Do you choose to buy "vons house brand" paper towel or the more expensive fancy, quilted type?

Made by the same Warren Oil that bottles the Supertech Oils for most of the country.

Is there a place where this information can be looked up? I've been trying to find a place... The closest I came to was a reference to using a MSDS search and wal-mart's oils come up, but not Meijer...
