Background - 02 Dodge 3500 Cummins turbo diesel 4x4, ETH/DEE. Used as a daily driver. Round trip 45 miles per day mostly highway. Limited hauling and towing. Climate is SW Missouri (not to cold and not to hot). Have been running Rotella T 15w40 Mopar filter and changing every 5000 miles. I drive 18,000 miles a year. What are your recommendations?

You might want to do an oil analysis, including TBN, on your next change. If that comes in real good, you could consider extending your drain intervals a bit. Your climate/loads/driving are fairly easy on the oil.

Hey Pit Bull,
Please no TDR oil wars here

Sorry couldn't help kidding you.I see you found this great oil Mecca.Lots of good info and people here.Of course there have been casulties.

Hey Pitbull -- They love synthetic oils at this site. You wouldn't maybe, you know, be trolling or anything would you be? (Lee Weber from the TDR board)

Pit, welcome and to answer your question; that engine is so well built you could run about any HDD oil with remarkable results.

Analysis is the key but I would use a stratopore Fleetguard oil filter and Schaeffers 15w40 and go 15,000 mile drains verifing with the analysis.

That engine was designed for 15,000 mile drains on one oil fill and one oil filter.

I've tested all three for 15,000 and it will do it in a healthy engine easily.

Hi,
Pitbull - I would suggest you try for an "ELF" Donaldson filter. An excellent and durable oil filter with synthetic media

Use Mobil's full synthetic Delvac 1 5w-40 - a great oil in these engines - and go for annual oil changes. Spring is the best time

A mid point analysis would confirm the oils' and engine's health

I have had millions of kms experience with both of these excellent products

Regards

I've seen 15,000 mile intervals with 7500 mile filter changes. Analysis looked good.

This was with Amsoil AME 15w40 and the SDF 80 filter--No-by-pass.

I've also seen some customers with Ford PSD's doing 10,000 filter and 20,000 on the oil. With the analysis looking good as well.

My suggestion would be to follow Terry's advice and doing some preliminary Analysis. Once you have the Drain interval you like, then you can back off on the testing.

What's the longest on one engine without rebuild, and did you use Analysis?

Hi,
the longest engine life to date is almost exactly 600000 miles ( today ). This engine - one of a number with similar distance on them - has an oil consumption of about 1litre/6000kms. Oil consumption has been constant at this for about the last 450000 miles

Oil is changed at 100000kms ( 62000 miles ), Donaldson ELF3998 full flow filters replaced then and the Mann-Hummel Spinner 2 by-pass centrifuge cleaned out at every second oil change. The by-pass retains no oil at shutdown. This Detroit 60 Series engine develops 500hp at 1800 revs and the whole of life fuel economy is about 2.28kms/1litre. It runs at about 1650 revs at 100km/h ( 62mph ) and the engine spends about 75% of its "on" time at highway speed. Average speed to date is 80kmh/50mph - total engine hours meter/total distance recorded calculation

We have never lost viscosity with Delvac 1 ( about +/-3%), the maximum soot level recorded has been 3.58%, the lowest TBN ( D4739) was 1.37 and the Max TAN 7.00

Regards
