2005 Honda Accord 2.4L K24 400k-ish miles
in service 6100 miles

out/off: 4 quarts Valvoline R&P 5w-30 and 1 quart HPL EC30 with OG Fram Titanium FS3593a.

in/on: 5 quarts HPL PCEO 5w-40 and OG wire backed Fram Titanium FS3593a.

king of filters. this engine went through about 5 quarts of makeup oil in this interval…. usage began to taper off towards the end. top up was always HPL PCEO 5w-30 or M1 0w-40. hoping the 40w will burn a little less. Media is currently wicking dry.

"Premium" oil burning at that rate...
Filter looks presentable.

Great work Brendan. Thank Younfor cut and post

it isn’t the fault of the oil, the car needs valve seals and probably has some extremely worn rings.
Rings live in a harsh lubrication environment. Inferior oil, lack of appropriate viscosity and/or lubricating can take its toll. If they are gunked up and stuck the cleaning may eventually bring them back.

Have you checked the PCV valve?
Also is this an old stock filter or a unicorn that still has thick Donaldson synteq media?
How does it's size compare to the 7317?

i have no idea what the previous owners did for 400k miles, i can only assume OCI’s by the MM. its had two berryman piston soaks and a BG EPR flush. if you let the car idle long enough it will start to ever so slightly smoke and everything i’ve put together points towards bad valve seals.

brand new PCV valve with a catch can. the catch can still isn’t registering on its dip stick so i dont believe its eating it through the PCV system. this is an old stock filter.
it is quite a bit larger than a 7317 filter, and i am using a kia/Hyundai coolant-to-oil heat exchanger mounted on the filter pad of the K24.

^^^ Pretty clean for those high 400K-ish miles. If R&P is removing varnish, it's not going to leave much if any visible deposits in the filter media. Dissolved varnish will be too small of particulate to see. How the bottom of the valve cover cleans up will be a good thing to monitor. The small amount of carbon deep down in the pleats might be piston ring are deposits, etc that's being cleaned up.

I was going to say it looks pretty good for 400K+-then I saw those cam lobes... At least there's a lot of K24s around, if she gives up the ghost. I would run HDEO in it, but then it's going to whack the cat, unfortunately. You'll be like my brother's '01 Accord with an empty converter!

i replaced the cat not too long ago, cam lobes don’t look great but there wasn’t any alarming amount of metal in the filter. HPL PCEO 5w-40 has a HTHS of like ~4.2 so i feel it can do the job.

HTHS helps, but I was thinking a little more ZDDP would help those cam lobes, but burning that much oil wouldn’t help the new converter any. 40 weight is a good move.
