Just wanted to know, when was the last time someone got pulled over and had their fuel checked to see if they were running off road diesel? I'm talking those in diesel cars and light duty trucks. Nothing larger.

You hear all this talk about getting fined for running off road diesel but I never hear of anyone getting checked.

Don't try it in Iowa. My brother farms and has several diesel trucks and gets DOT'd at least twice/yr. Funny thing is, the DOT officer lives in my home town and my brother is friends with him, but when Mr. DOT is at work, he's all business. He knows very well who he's pulling over as he lives in the town too, but work is work. His first check is almost always sampling the diesel fuel. The fine is those caught using red-dyed diesel in an on-the-road vehicle is $500. The penalty for a second violation doubled to $1,000.

My dad has bought farm diesel off his friend for decades for his various diesel uses. He also drives to the nearby reserve to fill-up his tank with tax free gas. They don't even ask for his status card. It's such a joke.

I’ve never been checked, but I actually quit mixing ATF in the IDIs for fuel additive because I’m not sure if the “revenoors” could tell the difference between ATF and off road dye!

Saw this pop up active topics... What is "off road diesel"? I could google it sure, but figured i'd ask.

Thanks! what are the benefits, lower priced? more power?

Illegal for highway use, but crooked folks don't seem to care and are happy for the rest of us to shoulder the load.

Its a lot cheaper, since a large percentage of the price per gallon (depending on where you live) is highway taxes. Totally illegal, and it doesn't take but one stop to offset a lot of "savings." And honestly, if you use the highways you should pay the tax to keep them up (though admittedly its not a perfect system- you burn road-taxed fuel even when driving on toll roads, hybrid and electric cars don't pay fuel tax put pay a fixed registration fee in lieu, etc.). Infrastructure is getting bad enough as it is.

It is run by IRS. Whether it is Washington, Texas, Florida, Ohio, Alabama, or other states, the fine for illegal use of dyed diesel is $10/gallon or $1,000 per violation (a tank with red diesel), whichever is greater. For instance, if 20 gallons of such fuel are revealed in your tank, the fine will be $1,000.

my uncle worked for a state power company that filled their on road trucks from the heating oil tank!!! do you feel lucky PUNK!!

And what are the criteria they'd use to convince the judge to issue a warrant?

"He doesn't want to be searched".

I thought this was America!

Off road diesel is about a dime cheaper here-- the gas station must be making 40-50 cents a gallon. I bought it 5 gal at a time last winter when my home heating oil dealer went Tango Uniform during a subzero snap.

Speaking as someone who just got done buying 6 tanks of gasoline and ostensibly paying taxes on that gas to help in the upkeep on the 1800 miles of interstate I traveled while burning those 6 tanks of gas, I must admit to being a little peeved at the differing levels of application of those highway taxes. Texas looks to be applying their taxes appropriately, as does Georgia and Alabama. Mississippi isn't as vigilant it would appear, but Louisiana...oh Louisiana...

The majority of Louisiana gets a passing grade for application of highway taxes, but the state gets a HUGE fail overall just from how horrendous Shreveport's section of I-20 is. I have never seen a public highway in such a state of disrepair in all of my life! I couldn't go over 45 MPH through that city due to its poor roadway. There were literally pieces of vehicle, broken-off pieces of vehicles, littering the roadside in Shreveport as I jounced through town at a snail's pace.

For shame, Louisiana, FOR SHAME!!!
