Odd Kohler failure

A customer brought this Kohler K 241 head in looking for a replacement. The hole is burned clear through, it started spitting fire while he was mowing. My guess is is the head was cracked from the spark plug being overtorqued and combustion pressure combined with heat cycling eroded through the aluminum. Luckily I had a used head, a quick insert for the spark plug threads and he was on his way.

Geez, what a shame. It's a lawn mower. How tight did he think the plug should be ? Idiot.. He is very lucky you had a spare head layin around. He'll over torque the next plug, guaranteed. Some people just don't know when to stop on the wrench. My father-in-law was one of those people. 2 left hands. Broke everything, and wanted me to fix it.

The only Kohler engine failures were on my job . 2 cylinder Kohlers mounted to power mini excavators we towed around with our Gas Utility Trucks. They were maintained by the motor pool very well, but the piston rings would always give up, and the blow by was so bad, they just ran a hose under the machines. They were run hard though. 8-12 hrs a day @ full throttle. Go thru a qt of oil a day easy. They were not the Courage engines. After a few years, the manufacturer started installing small diesel engines on the machines, and that solved the problem. I'd say the Kohler's would last about 1 year, then they pushed up daisies. Very hard to start in the cold NY winters.
