OCI for 2009 Camry with 2AZ-FE

We just picked up a 2009 Camry with 60,000 miles on the 2.4L 2AZ-FE. I just put a PureOne filter on and 4.5 quarts of MC 5w20.

The owner's manual recommends 5,000 mile OCI's. It has a maintenance minder but I don't know if I should just stick with the 5,000 mile recommendation or let the maintenance minder tell me when to change it.

The maintenance reminder begins blinking at start-up a few hundred miles out from the maintenance interval in my Corolla. Then, when it has been 5,000 miles, "MAIN. REQ." stays on. This occurs on my '11 even with the 10,000 mile OCI, per the manual. Toyota still recommends 5,000 mile maintenances, but basically it's just a tire rotation every 5,000 miles and an oil change every other time. However, I change the oil at the 5,000. Some would call it wasteful, especially when dealing with syntetic. I honestly think your Camry will "call" for maintenance at the 5,000 mile mark IF it was reset at it's last OC. I think you selected a solid filter and oil. Look into the Toyota OEM filters. I find mine for right at $4 at the dealer.

We have a 2007 camry 2.4L/auto with 85,000 miles. During the warranty period I ran syn. oil 5,000 miles. We only put about 10,000 miles on it per year so I will just change it 2X per year. I also use the pur1's and it seems to like the PU 5-30. We had an oil consumption issue with ours and got a new engine at 45,000. May want to check your oil level between changes. Also just changed the trans. fluid to amsoil ATF-WS with no issues. Love the car except for the oil consumption issue. Hopefully they fixed it before 2009...

My 2006 Scion tC has the same oil consumption issues but it just recently got bad at around 90k miles with a quart every 3k miles. I don't have a problem with pulling the dipstick and adding oil so I just keep on keepin' on.

I suggest 5k OCIs with a nice quality conventional. If you're having to add a bit of lube during that time frame, that makes it even better.

Follow the manual / OLM.

We have an 04 with the same engine. When it was under warranty, I used whatever I had on hand or felt like buying (synthetic most of the time) for 5000 mile oil changes. But my sister puts tons of miles on it so I switched to 7500 miles per oil change on synthetic. Just noticed oil consumption on the last change with 130,000 miles on it. My sister moved to NC for a year so I used Ultra last time and timed it for 10,000 miles and told her to check the oil.

It's a pretty low maintenance engine. If you use conventional, stick with 5000 miles.

Tried everything on my 02 2AZ-FE over the years. My own observations and used oil analysis on here indicate Toyota I4 and v6 engines like M1. The sweet spot seems too be 7k (using M1)

Lucas oil stabilizer. You might as well just run a thicker oil if you want to run that stuff. All it does is thicken the oil
