At around 86,000 miles I switched my 3.0 Ranger to full synthetic oil. Previously the truck had always had either Pennzoil YB or Motorcraft syn blend with 3000 mile OCIs. For the change I used Kendall GT1 full synthetic 5W20, and the truck is currently at 91,600 miles, so that's 5600 miles on the oil.

What I have noticed...

- The truck loses some of the synthetic. Not much, but it was down about a half quart after 3500 miles or so. I'm not sure where the loss is. There is a very light film of oil on the back of the oil pan that could be from the rear main seal, which is known to leak on these engines. It could be burning some of it too, but it definitely doesn't smoke or anything. I topped off with Motorcraft full synthetic 5W20.

- The synthetic still looks really good. It's not even close to black with 5600 miles on it. I was going to change it early at 4000 miles or so since this was the first fill of syn, but it looked too good then too, so I left it. I know oil color isn't an indication of condition and all that, but still. I have read on here that clean looking oil may in fact be a bad thing if it means that the oil is leaving contaminants in the engine, but I don't think that's the case for me. I used a quality synthetic and the OCIs before this were very short. Maybe there just wasn't much to clean?

I'm going to go at least 6000 miles on this oil, and I may try for 7000. I've never done long OCIs on the engine, so it's hard to break old habits, but the oil still looks really good too.

Oil will be consumed right after you switch types but the consumption should slow down or stop if there are no real issues

It's not uncommon for oil consumption to spike and for slight leaks to happen when changing from dino to synthetic in a high mileage engine. That's one reason why I only use synthetics starting from early in the engine's life.

At 198500 miles on my SubaruI switched from dino - GTX, formula shell, etc - to group III - T6 - and consumed 2 qts in the first 1500 miles. I'm at 6000 miles now on the oil(204500 total miles) and haven't consumed anything since I last added at 1500 miles.

FWIW, I to have a nice film and even a slight drip formation on the bottom my oil pan (no drips on the ground, even after a weekend of sitting) To me, this means the 2 qts were consumed, not leaked. I've read and heard others say this expected, but I still don't understand the mechanism for that initially high consumption.

I would suggest changing to a high mileage oil...which might help your minor leak issue.

Try Valvoline MaxLife Syn 5w30...from all I've read, this oil has helped some in stopping leaks.

Before you get scared off of synthetic it may not be causing your problem to begin with. A somewhat logical approach to your oil loss is that your went past your normal oil change interval of 3000 before you noticed any oil loss be it consumption or loss by leaking. You have now consumed 1/2 quart in 3500 miles !!! that's nothing even with meticulous people !!

It could be the engine getting used to the oil, I have seen engines that did not like a particular brand of oil before, mind you not a type a brand. Run 3 OCI's before you decide to do anything, and I applaud you for not dumping perfectly good oil as well. If you still have this huge 1/2 quart problem that everyone is looking at (you said observation, I'm talking about some of the replies) then try changing to a different brand, there is no use in me giving you any advice on what to use as it's written all over this forum daily with enthusiasm.

Synthetic will not cause any leaks, nor any consumption after any mileage with conventional, I despise oil company advertising, if synthetic caused any oil leakage, or consumption the oil companies would be all over it between each other, in fact though oil companies state that it's fine to switch between synthetic, and convention either way at any time. Enjoy your extended OCI, also keep some records I also use synthetic for extended OCI, I'm not saving any money, however I do get to be a bit lazier.

Too much anecdotal evidence proves otherwise IMO. I call that opinion but I'm so sure of it that I consider it fact, though I don't expect others to view my opinions as fact. :)

Jag ok we no problem on that, and I agree we could argue to the cows come home, however I think you will also agree on
