o2 sensor, which, where to get

hi i have a 01 prelude base model. my o2 sensor is going bad. Honda sells there for 250 bucks. aftermarket for 200 bucks. and universal one for 50 bucks.
does it matter which brand I get? anywhere particular i should get this . thanks guys

Is it a good idea to get the universal to save money? Or is it a difficult job getting a universal to work...as Ive never had to replace one but have always been curious what was involved.
 
I would not get a universal, if it means that you have to cut and reattach the connector to the wires. Soend the extra $$$ and get the correct connector.

Go OEM and be happy - a good portion of the time it is the smart choice. Denso is good, and is often OE maker.

if the only diff is with and without the connector and you are good at soldering (and i mean good, not merely acquainted with the concept) it is a great way to go.
 
thanks all for the reply. mudd dawg thanks esp to you too. my friend works at an auto part store and he gets the denso for 60 bucks at his cost. getting it through sparkplugs.com help me out. only thing is i gotta wait. oh well. my friend is a master tech and is going to rewire and crimp the wires for me. thanks foryour concern. i still save 200 dollars.
 
I would use solder rather than a crimp connection. I had problems with crimp connections under the car where you can easily get corrosion (the dreaded green wire disease).

A lot of O2 sensors draw fresh air in through a purposely-included gap between the wiring and insulation. This means that any repairs to the wiring of the O2 sensor will render the sensor useless. I've seen this warning in many of the recent GM shop manuals.

Bingo. O2 sensors are basically a throw-away item now. If there's any sort of a problem, you just pitch it. They can't be cleaned and they even caution you not to use a sensor that has been dropped or mishandled in any way. They're very delicate pieces, apparently.
 
If the solder wicks down into the wire and under the insulation (and it will if you use too much), it will seal that gap between the wire strands and the insulation. EDIT: There are ways to prevent this, as anyone who has done much soldering knows. Clipping a hemostat or an alligator clip on the wire just as it comes out of the insulation will prevent solder from wicking under the insulation.

Using a waterproof heat-shrinkable splice will still allow the reference air to get in.

denso 02 sensor are the best. it was a direct fit. no crimping. thank you muddawg and eveyrone else
