O2 sensor replacement

I changed my O2 sensor at 120-130k (IIRC) when it was throwing a code - no change in MPG or performance. 100k miles later and the replacement NTK/NGK is still going fine. OBDI and only 1 O2

ive heard people say that an o2 can get lazy before it finally goes bad, but honestly the computer tests for reaction time and there is a specified ammount of time the sensor has before chrowing a cel.
as long as the o2 is good enough for the computer, then its just plain good enough. replacing things early when they dont need to be replaced is nonsence. wait untill the computer finally says the o2 is lazy enough to effect economy and emissions, and then replace it.

ive got 180,000 on an original pair of o2's in my car and im besting the epa mileage by quite a few mpg's even at this advanced stang in my cars life.
 
My experience with O2 sensors is that they usually cause a CEL on the highway, once 200 miles into a 750-mile trip. At least that was with the OE NTK sensors on my old Ford Contour. Never got a CEL for an O2 sensor in around-town driving.

Also the replacement sensors have not failed yet.
 
My understanding is that not all OBD-I cars featured programming to measure the reaction time of the O2 sensor. Many did not, and in some old Nissan and Mazda cars, a warning light would come on at a certain mileage and tell you to replace the O2 sensor. They didn't actually measure O2 sensor reaction times. Most people ignored the light or covered them up anyway.

However, as I understand it, OBD-II cars require measuring the reaction time of the upstream O2 sensor.
 
yes, i had a rabbit that flashed an o2 sensor light every 30,000 reminding me to change it. old fashoned fuel injected cars might not have any way to test the response time of an o2. (if response time is the right word).
but im reasonably sure obd2 does.

on my car for instance, there is a engine code for an o2 sensor which is stuck high, stuck low, not cycling quick enough, etc.
