I'd use coolant or grease. Even a few drops of motor oil. Dry o-rings lead to leaks.I’ll be changing the water pump today I was wondering what I should use to lubricate the o ring. I have lots of lubricants, but not ones for actual O-rings
Heck no! Oil deteriorates rubber.I'd use coolant or grease. Even a few drops of motor oil.

That's quite a generalization.Heck no! Oil deteriorates rubber.
I'm not the only one,That's quite a generalization.
But go ahead and use oil and post back in 6 months asking why is my new water pump leaking.Because oil degrades o-rings. either shrinks or swells them.
I guess you have never seen o-rings used to seal piping containing oil then?Because oil degrades o-rings. either shrinks or swells them.

There are many oil containing items in a vehicle that use o-rings to seal them.
The standard black orings from harbor freight, work fine with oil.
OP is talking about a water pump used to move coolant, not oil.I guess you have never seen o-rings used to seal piping containing oil then?
