I'm looking at tires for my dad's Suburban (leaning toward the General Grabber HTS) and I see some with S speed rating. I know for car tires you want to avoid S rating as it doesn't have a nylon cap which helps strengthen the tire, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that most truck tires have a nylon cap regardless of speed rating. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks

You need to match or exceed load rating as well. I have stepped down one speed rating as long as the load rating is equal or higher with no ill effects.

Very mixed reviews on tirerack about these tires. If you look at the mileage when reviewed, they seem to get harsh and noisy as the miles mount up. Many reviews report disappointing tread life.

I can say the same for the Bridgestone Alenzas that are on there now. My dad already went and bought the Generals on Saturday for a good price of $124 a piece anyway, I was just curious about the nylon cap.

Judging by the s rated tires I've seen, I just avoid them at nearly all costs..

I've got s rated tires on my Cav, next tire will be at least T rated...

I agree with you on car tires, I even went with V rated Kumho Ecsta ASX's for my Malibu. From the factory tires the difference was incredible.

But anyway, I think we can all agree truck tires are a very different animal.

We got the new General Grabber HTS's installed today, and the sidewall indicates it has two polyester + two steel + 1 polyamide on the tread...

Is polyamide comparable to having nylon?

Yes, the polyamide is in place of the nylon cap. It has an advantage that it does not 'flat spot' at very cold temps.FWIW--Oldtommy

Polyamide is a generic way of saying nylon. However the term also includes other fibers such as kevlar.
