I am sad to learn Yogi Berra has left us at age 90. Not only a great catcher but a highly quoteable pitcher of quips.

"We made too many wrong mistakes."

"The future ain't what it used to be."

I'm all for romanticizing things but at my age I've learned to discount a few things like "The Golden Age of Television" and such.
The passing of Yogi Berra however, is an undeniable milestone (end of an era if you like) for baseball. Kira

19 seasons (granted, two, '46 and '65, 7 and 4 games respectively were quite short)
2120 games
7555 at bats
1175 runs scored
2150 hits
321 2B
49 3B
358 HR
.482 SLG (Slugging percentage)
.285 BA (Batting average)
1430 RBI
704 BB
414 STRIKE OUTS Players today rack up that many strike outs in 3 seasons.

Baseball was different when he first started playing. He and his teammates would ride the subway to Yankee Stadium along with the fans and talk about the upcoming game. Can you imagine that happening, today?

I saw him play 55 years ago. Glad I can say that. Also Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Whitey Ford......

Got to walk out in center field when the monuments were actually in the playing field (as I recall). Never forget it.

Yogi was to NY like Musial was to StL, a genuinely nice guy who never got enough credit for how great he was. They both lived admirable lives and were both married to their wives, apparently happily, for over 60 years.
A sad day for baseball, Yogi was a great talent and a fine man. DiMaggio, Mantle, and Ruth were brilliant on the field but rather flawed off it in many ways...Yogi lived life as well as he played ball.

"It was so dark in there, you couldn't see your face in front of you."

No, I don't know if YB said it; I read it long ago in Reader's Digest. But even if he didn't, it reads like the kind of slightly-bent aphorisms he used to come up with.

Yogi Berra once reported a fire. When the firefighters asked him how to get there, he asked them if they didnt have the tred truck any longer. A woman complimented Yogi Berra and said he looked cool in his Hawaiian shirt, to which he replied "You don't look so hot yourself."

The same with football players. I remember they would have jobs off season.
