Nu-finish on a beater - pics

Well prep was a bottle of nu-finish scratch doctor, it was applied with a terry cloth foam applicator by hand to the entire body. Man that was a lot of work scrubbin that stuff in. Vehicle was washed with Simoniz car wash after the scratch doctor rub down. Three coats of nu-finish car polish were applied over the coarse of two days after the vehicle was washed.

The vehicle has been driven for a week and has not been washed since the last application of nu-finish. The sun was at its high point so there is minimal reflection. Car manufacture date per door label was 5/93.

Not bad results for cheap products and improper paint prep. Just needed something to practice my technique on before I applied liquid glass to my good vehicle. You can see in the one pic a glimpse of a tailgate, this has two extremely thin coats of liquid glass on it.

Three coats! Think about what you're doing...Nu Finish is basically a solvent heavy AIO...its not exactly layering because each subsequent application removes the previous one.

I could understand two coats to ensure complete coverage (like the instructions recommend BTW), but you're needlessly laboring away with three.

I agree with JAC...three coats is overkill. You're doing nothing but creating work for yourself.

Darn, I was expecting a side-by-side with a real polish to see the difference, if any.

A nice shine that suits the car just fine. I found that when I used Liquid Glass on my car it reveled some painting defects (orange peel) that I did not notice before. There is something to be said for an inexpensive polish that looks quite good and lasts a long time.

I've used Nu Finish on my 96 Cherokee since it was born, not because it's cheap(although I don't mind that) but because it lasts a loooong time, and the paint still looks very nice.

Ding! Ding! The liquid glass I used on my truck brought to light a lot of flaws I didn't notice before. It did lessen a few but I think it highligts more then it hides. It is very easy to use and smells great though.

Heck, one coat is overkill on a beater. Especially when you're rolling on steelies sans hub caps. I mean, why bother?

I don't see why you shouldn't take care of any vehicle even if it is old. I used to wax my '89 Buick Regal, and half the clear coat was missing. I also kept the interior spotless and washed it frequently. Just because something is old doesn't mean you shouldn't take care of it, IMO.

Not what I meant. "Old" =/= "beater" necessarily.

But I agree with you. I took good care of my '89 Century (miss it too). At some point though, regardless of the vehicle's age, there comes a point on a BEATER that it no longer makes sense to work up a sweat trying to polish the proverbial turd.

Washing is another story. Got to keep it clean.

Yeah, I just put new calipers on it today just because I wanted to bleed the front brakes. They were cheap enough I figured why not just change em out.

Your missing the point guys. I used this car to practice my technique so I wouldn't leave scratches in the clearcoat on my truck. Plus it was fun.

The steelies are awesome it makes the car look mean.

Aha! I did miss that tidbit in your post. Well then, polish away!

Could you fit some baby moon "cop" caps on those wheels? That would up the mean factor considerably IMO.

Beater or not, that car's still in really good shape! Who cares if someone wants to take the time to keep a *beater* in nice looking condition, he bought the car, it's his to do with as he pleases.

I, for one, am actually impressed with people who continue to take excellent care of their older cars, just cause they're old doesn't mean they need to look like ____.

BTW - I still wax my 10yr old truck 3-4 times a year, it looks better then most newer cars on the road today; AND, the paint on it, is even in better shape then the paint on our newly purchased '04 Tacoma.

If anything it will protect the clear coat from flaking off in the sun!

NF is worth the effort on any car worth keeping.IMHO

I started using this stuff on my beater 95 Neon... The shine isn't that great compared to when I used NXT, but I got tired of waxing the POS every 3 months when the wax wore off. The way I see it, NuFinish is definitely better than nothing and it is good for those who don't want to spend a lot of time protecting their paint. On my other cars which are a lot newer and worth taking good care of, I use Zaino, which is a lot more time consuming and stuff like that. For the beater, the one step process of NuFinish is perfect.
