Hey, all, I have a 1986 F-150 with the 4-speed, cast iron NP435 and the Ford 9" rear end. This truck is kind of ran hard, and is used to haul wood and even a car or two now and then. Also, it gets taken off road a LOT for play, and to go out into woods and load up with wood. It's a mountain goat, that's for sure.

Well, I've switched the 302 in it over to Rotella 5W-40. The rear end has whatever came in it, more than likely (120k miles), and the NP435 has M1 75W-90 (GL-5). After I switched to that, I then started to do research and found out that GL-5 is not what you want for older transmissions. My truck has done fine with it, but it does very poor now that temperatures are cold. And, all in all, I don't feel like it's the right stuff for my truck.

I did the same to my wife's Eclipse, all around the same time, and her shifting started out better, then noticeably got worse and worse, so we switched her's to Redline MT-90. HUGE increase in smooth shifting. Now, that is what I want to put in my transmission (it specs an 80W-90). And I do want to stay synthetic, because when I put the Mobil1 75W-90 in there, my gas mileage improved dramatically. Don't know by how much, I just noticed that the gas hand didn't move nearly as fast while going on the highway (2300RPM @ 55mph = bad mileage no matter what for this old V8).

So, are there any disagreements about MT90 for the NP435? Also, like I said, I want to change the fluid in my 9" rear. I want to use a 75W-140 for it, but don't really know what brand to go with. I was more than likely going to go with Redline, because the MT90 did so well for me, but does anyone else have any recommendations for a good rear end gear oil? Thanks for any advice given.

1986 could have either the 8.8" or 9"

I called Mobil a while back about using their GL5 75W90 gear oil in the Muncie SM420 in my Jeep. They did not recommend it due to it's nature of eating away the synchro's.
I ended up going on the cheap side and using Coastal 80W90 GL3/GL4/GL5 gear oil. It doesn't smell like it uses sulpher and my 420 shifts pretty well, even when it's cold.

I use WalMart Supertech gear oils in my diffs, due to the fact that they get changed several times a wheel'n season. In your case, what the heck, stick with Redline.

Yeah, my truck for sure has the 9". I know what they look like (no bolts on the back cover, no drain plug) while an 8.8 has bolts on the rear AND a drain plug. And the rear has a tag on it that says it's a 9". Just trust me, though, I know I have a 9" rear. Thanks for the comments. Any more opinions would be great to hear. I do think I'll go with the redline in the rear since it has done well for me from what I've seen. Unless someone changes my mind. BTW, I do want to go synthetic. I think synthetic in the drivetrain really helps improve gas mileage.

Didn't know that. I've never seen one that new with a 9" in it!

Yeah, they even put 8.8's in some light duty F-250's starting in 83 (ending in 89), but they quit using the 9" in all the trucks in 1986, if I remember correctly. Btw, my body style started in 80, ended in 86.

Redline MT90 is an excellent choice for the manual.

ANY synthetic 75w140 will work well with the 'end. But, since you mentioned MPG, I'd probably step down to a 75w110 from Amsoil or JoeGibbs.

I don't think that a 302 will stress the 9" much and you could probably just stick with ANY GL5 75w90 in that 'end.

Synthetic gear lube is too hard on ring and pinions and I know someone that can prove it,My father's friend Rich.He has seen rear ends go out do to synthetic gear lube including racing rear ends.Rich has a 1983 Monte Carlo with a 9 inch ford rear end packed with a detroit locker. The place he got his rear end from told him not to use synthetic gear lube, screws up detroit lockers
