Retorquing would of done no good at all

It was the head gasket and it just came apart. Pictures at 11

I once lost a head gasket on a 22R, I had used a Fel pro gasket and my machine shop said they should always be re-torqued, regardless of what fel pro say, on re-torqueing I typically get about another 1/3 turn.

The guy that rebuilt my head just happened by and pointed out to me the failures in the gasket. Just don't go Tawain after market go US or OEM. The gasket was of the wrong material it should of been graphite layers with a wire mash and it was sprayed on graphite with a steel center

Anyway he looked at the block and head and said no damage all is good

did you buy the gasket or did you pay someone else to do it?

man, if i paid someone to do a job and they used crappy parts, i'd be livid.

Do you need to replace the headbolts each time you have that thing apart?

Edit: I just looked it up on the Corteco site and it looks like you're lucky, only one 1.6 Corolla shows it needs new headbolts each time around. Interestingly, Toyota has a few diesel economy cars listed.

I just got the bill for the new engine gasket set.

But it was several $$ bucks cheaper then just buying the parts I needed.

Ken

P.S. I went OEM this Time around

I learnt way back to use the best gaskets available. McCord, Fel-Pro's Print-O-Seal, Mr. Gasket etc or OEM at least. I got caught with my SB Chev some years back, never again.

I have had problems with Fel-pro's in the past.
As it happens I have just used 'Rock's' on my rebuilt Toyota 22R but I am almost sure they were U.S. made, they did seem every bit as good and the same construction as the OE that came off the old engine, I guess time will tell.
The fell-pro I used on my Triumph failed after only a few K and was not made to the OE type of construction.
