NOS 25 yr. old water pump?

4 cyl. 1.3L Ford VSG413 engine on 1999 Kohler generator. This engine was built in Spain, used on '91-'98 European Ford Fiestas as well U.S. ag./industrial equipment. The link below lists NOS water pumps for $35 vs. $370+ for new units .

Would the bearings and grease in a shelved 25 year old NOS unit still be good?? Thank you.

I just installed a new pump, not a rebuilt , on our 5.2 Magnum motor in our Roadtrek camper van. It was sealed in a plastic bag for about 12 years. I bought it when we bought the van because it had about 80k miles when we got it. Coming home from last vacation it started making noise and antifreeze was coming out of the weep hole. Haven't used it yet but I believe it will be good. put a new pump on our Mazda 5 because it was at 165k this spring and it is doing fine. It sat in my garage for 6-7 years. Also in a sealed plastic bag.

Three thoughts: how much time / labor to change out the "new" one if it turns out to be bad? What are the consequences if the new pump is bad - mere inconvenience, safety of a family member (eg elderly family member that needs oxygen), etc. How much time are you spending wondering if it is good? On this latter point, I have learned through trial and error that if I think about whether something is a good idea more than a few moments, it is typically not a good idea but that for whatever reason I looking for a reason to rationalize it.
 
If its easy to change and not going to strand you I'd give it a shot myself.. I went through a couple new water pumps that didn't last long on my F-150 and when I was shopping for one again I saw a NOS Cardone rebuild on ebay in an ancient looking box for $15 shipped and I said "what the heck at least its an oem casting". Its been working fine.

I think the answer is you don't know. If the Seal is made of Viton its probably fine. If its EPDM or Nitrile then maybe not.

I agree its all about how hard it is to swap. If its not hard, I would try an old one.
 
Are you sure it is shelved for 25 years like you shelved it in a garage? or the seller said so? or you assume?

It cost a lot of money to shelve a commodity for that long, even just in opportunity cost of a loan interest.
