I just love to watch the deer on the side of the road as they lick the salt...

Sand is useless. It gets kicked to the side and sits there when theres no snow left anymore. They need to keep using salt or find something that works as good as salt but doesnt harm the environment.

Cars dont rust anymore anyway.

One issue with salt is that it doesn't work below a particular temperature. I don't recall what that number is but it ain't too great below -25C. Cars rust bad unless you've got an Intrepid, but the resale is so low the car may as well have rusted to death anyway.

Salt is also hard on bridges and such. Some of the newer studies on studded tires have found that banning studs results in a net loss to society, due to the other measures that are needed to increase traction and to increased accident rates. Japan found that when use of studded tires dropped below some threshhold, something like 20%, road maintenance increased by a factor of 20 as everyone was actually polishing the ice on the road while the studded tire users were keeping it roughened. People in Finland who use the studless winter tires drive slower and still have a higher accident rate.
