After using Mobil 1 5W-20 in my '04 Honda CR-V for the last 25,000 miles, I can safely say the claims of more noise with Mobil are true. I went with Castrol Syntec for one change, and thought it was quieter, but this last weekend I went from Mobil 1 to Castrol GTX and it got much quieter.

That's not all, though. The last time I changed I put in the Mobil 1 filter, thinking I was going to go with 10,000 mile oil changes. I don't think so. I noticed this Mobil filter must have had a bad ADBV, because the oil light would stay on for 1/2 second after starting cold, whereas the light went out immediately with the Honda filters. I put the Honda filter back in, and sure enough, the light does go out right away.

I think 5000 mile changes with Castrol GTX or Syntec Blend for $3/quart with a $2 Honda filter (3 for the price of 2, and even come with the crush washers) makes more sense than $6/quart Mobil for 10k with a $6 Mobil filter.

I would go with Amsoil over Mobil 1, just because the PAOness of Mobil 1 is in question. Also Amsoil filters are very good (made by Wix). But your current plan is fine too, though I would use Maxlife.

dude you can go with castrol gtx and a super tech filter from walmart and get good used oil analysis out to 5k miles or more.. not too bad for 15$ or less for an oil change.. you dont need syn in that motor unless its turbo or modified

we have a 99 crv, 7500 OCI on dino since day 1. 90,000 miles. zero problems, only light discoloration under the valve cover. These motors are easy on oil.

Our 02 accord 2.3L is actually quieter on M1 x/20 than Castrol syntec x/20.

If quietness is what you were seeking, then why did you discontinue Castrol Syntec - then return to Mobil 1?

I went with Syntec because the store was out of Mobil, and I went back to Mobil to make another comparison to confirm that that really was making more noise, and not just my imagination.

do a used oil analysis on mobil 1 and syntec to see which one appears to be better for your motor... personally for 5k mile oci's the gtx will serve you well and save $$

Each day that I drive our van, I’m more and more amazed at how quiet the idle is with M1 vs the conventionals brands I was using.

I've been using Mobil 1 for six years, and have no reason to be other than completely satisfied. I plan to continue using it unless I can see proof (and I'm talking serious long-term studies using used oil analysis, not anecdotes) why I should change.

FWIW, I used M1 in previous car (mostly SL that time) and never had oil consumption issue etc.. I wont use M1 now as there are one too many used oil analysis with high Iron readings.

Mobil 1 is available in many weights and formulations. Some M1's are now SM, some are not. Mobil 1 High Mileage oil, available in 10W30 and 10W40 weights, is NOT SM. I wonder if using it in its 10W30 version would be quieter and show less iron in a used oil analysis. It is 24 cents a quart cheaper that regular M1 in a 5W or 10W30 weight at my local Walmart.

Just curious, how are you getting the Honda filters for $2? I've always had to pay $4+ and that was from an inside source...

Must be a special the nearby dealers are running. Regular price is $3, but they offer a buy 2 get one free deal, so it works out to $6 for 3 filters. At least, I thought it was about $6 last time I bought them.

When you switched to GTX, did you stay with 5W-20?

I've always thought that the M1 noise phenomena was attributed to their thinner grades, but this is the first thread I've seen about the noise going away when switching to a thin dino of the same grade. Usually people have experienced a quieter motor when switching to a dino of a [thicker] grade. This has been an interesting thread.

as for the M1 i ran it for a long time in my truck in 5w30 and when i recently swithced to durablend in 10w30 its very noticably quieter and ildes smoother than with M1.. does not have the peppiness M1 seemed to have but i dont have the clakity clacking going on either and like i said it idles smoother

side note: isnt Mobil 1 10w30 thinner than the 5w30?? i was going to go up to Mobil 1 10w30 to see if the the motor loses the noise but i was told that the 10w is thinner than the 5w.

I was running conventional oil(10W30GTX)in car of mine and switched to Mobil 1 and noticed an increase in temp immediatly. At first I couldn't believe it was the Mobil 1 and flushed the radiator, changed the thermostat with no luck. I dumped the Mobil 1 after 4weeks and put GTX back in and the temp was back down to were it had been. Maybe my motor didn't like Mobil 1....who knows?

now thats just weird.. if anything it should be the other way around

gtx is like smooth butter... I found a decrease in engine noise/clatter with gtx too. I'll continue to use it most of the year and switch to xlm for the cold winters
