I saw an ad for Carmax on Auto Trader, and it seems that
without my ability to haggle I am at a disadvantage even before
I enter the showroom. Any experiences with them? Thanks

I'd agree. No haggle just means that theyve priced their profit into the number they give and dont want to bother with you beyond that. It doesnt mean that there isnt a better deal to be had... Just need to find it for yourself...

Go CarsDirect, I think if you want "no haggle" that is the only way to go. I hate when you have to get a new car, it is usually a 6-8 hour ordeal. With carsdirect they get you a price you like and you just go to the stealership, do the paperwork and you drive out. Much less stress.

Before I bought our Highlander, I test drove a Rav4 with about 900 miles on it at a CarMax. Another CarMax about 50 miles away sold brand new Toyotas and priced me the exact same car for 200 bucks less, new. And I showed the salesperson this and they still wouldn't lower the price of the used car. Absurd. Morons.

Then a year later, when replacing our other car, they had the cheapest 2006 Accord within 150 miles on cars.com. I bought it later that day. They were a treat to deal with.

Who knows, they are what they are but it's more important to find the car you want than who you buy it from. You'll see one every day, the other maybe never again.

With Edmunds TMV, you shouldn't really need to haggle to get a fair, maybe not great deal.

I think they are higher than some on their vehicles. I don't think that the salespeople are on commission based on the amount of profit made per unit like normal dealerships. It makes sense for a lot of people that don't like the high pressure tactics. I think you can search their stores and pay a nominal fee to transfer vehicles from other Carmax stores. You can sell them your car without purchasing theirs. IIRC they were on a list of top employers to work for several years back. I have seen the prices on vehicles come down a little if they don't sell. $500 to $1000 reduction on the vehicle I was looking at.

"No haggle" means they`ll totally bend you over. Give someone else your hard earned money, not those rip off artists.

If you think Carmax is sticking it to you, then those that you are allowed to haggle with would have to be sticking it to you even more !! i mean come on the have overpriced it just to begin with if they are lowering the price when dealing with you...

Carmax is expensive, however they have a buyback period of so many days (several I think) and that is worth a whole lot of money to many people when buying a used car/truck. I have never purchased a car from the, I have sold them a truck before... outstanding to deal with.

I think Carmax targets the "Costco crowd." By "Costco crowd," I am referring to the higher income buyers who do not mind paying a slight premium for good service, a higher quality product (in general) and an ethical/reputable vendor.

I tried to buy a 96 Z from a Carmax one time. The AC didn`t even work! I told them to knock off a grand and I`d give them cash, and they said "We`re a no haggle dealership". I was like,[censored]????????? This is Texas, good luck selling an overpriced car with no AC.

When I should cars we could always beat their prices- but you had to negotiate. Wasn't hard, but you had to at least be a decent negotiator. A lot of people would be willing to pay extra for the more pleasurable interaction. Where they will haggle is trade-in price.

I agree with your post combined with mine, as well I will add they also target women !! If I were a woman I would also buy from them due to the dealerships, used car salesmen trying to bend them over backwards, and I have also worked in a few dealerships and men for the most part I have worked around are nothing but scum of the earth working in used car sales, and as well dealerships !! I'm NOT for who has sympathy for any race, ethnic group, or gender.. BUT from what I seen is truly sick the way women are treated for the most part when dealing with car sales.

Carmax does have a professional service, and it's a very open system I have seen while browsing the cars, as I said I have never purchased a car from them, but I have browsed the lot several times.. the salesman leave you alone,... and if you have a question they are to the point, and I watched them dealing with women as well, and they have the very exact same if not more manners in dealing with women.. I guess that's one plus for having prices fixed, and no haggle dealing.

Does Carmax try to sell stuff like "paint protection" and "extended tire warranty"? That's how dealerships make money on used/new cars. I knew someone who bought a used car for a fairly good price then ended up spending another $1800 on those useless services

I have purchased a few cars from CarMax. No, they do not up sell stuff like under coating, paint protection, etc. They offer an extended warranty, if you want it. I bought one for my Titan and have had to use it once.

They include a 30 day warranty on vehicles that are out of manufacturer's warranty period, and a 5 day "bring it back" if you don't like it.

The nice thing about CMax, is I can walk the lot and the sales reps leave me alone. I can go in and get a rep when I want.

Sure, they make a profit, but I have enjoyed not being "hounded" when looking at inventory. The Auto Check (similar to CarFax), is online and you can check a vehicle online before you go to the lot.

And this is why people buy cars from carmax... I don't think they make any more profit than the other used car sellers, remember carmax only sells top notch cars that are low mileage, etc etc perfect history all that good stuff.

When you purchase a used car from a car lot then you start paying for the carfax and a lot more profit is made I have seen auto sales, the buyer pays NOTHING close to what they ask for these auctioned vehicles, and you take the chance.. Ask them what they will charge for a 5 day bring back no questions asked when picking a car up off a lot.. heck even a dealership..

CarMax 'buy back' program.... sure they will buy your car back.... but they will lowball you on their buy back offer.

Just keep looking on AutoTrader, local dealer ads or CL for better deals on a used car.

Wrong, you have 5 days to return the vehicle with 100% purchase refund from my understanding.

Used cars generally have a large profit margin involved.
The better the car and the newer, the higher that margin.
Most New Car' dealers make more money from their used vehicles than they do from new stuff.
CarMax, etc.. are better deals as they cut that margin down some, but a good haggler can do as well anywhere.
Check with NADA or edmunds.com first for a fair price.

Here's my CarMax story. We sold them our 2007 Chrysler Town & Country minivan recently. Their offer was reasonable, but a bit lower than I had hoped. A month later, we decided to finally do it, and had them re-appraise. They gave me the same offer, and I accepted it. A few weeks later, we saw our van on the website for exactly $4,950 more than they bought it for. I know they didn't have even $500 in refurb costs on that van.

I've been pretty unimpressed overall with CarMax's vehicle quality. Every time I've driven a car from them, something's just felt "off". It didn't drive right for some reason. Every car I've looked at has been dirty. We once found an old sock in the map pocket of a 2000 Town & Country we looked at years ago. They don't seem to detail the cars at all, and none have seemed to drive quite right. At the time of sale, our van was already cleaner than every CarMax vehicle I've ever seen.

They'll selling year-old Toyota Camrys with 15k miles for about $1,000 more than the Toyota dealer is ADVERTISING (without negotiation) brand new Camrys.

I've never bought a vehicle without haggling, and most likely won't in the future. I do believe that there are better deals to be had. And in this particular case (CarMax), I think there are better VEHICLES to be had as well.

The Z I had looked at was in really rough condition. The driver`s leather seat was all cracked and torn. The trim was dry rotted, and the AC didn`t work. It was going to need a new AC compressor. They were asking mint NADA for it. Only thing it had good was low miles. I told them to knock off a grand (the price of an AC compressor) and they gave me their nausiating spew "We`re a no haggle dealership". I laughed so hard! Selling a car in Texas with no AC is like selling someone ice at the North Pole! They`re nothing but rip-off artists.
