no engine oil dipstick by design

I must say I agree with burbguy. Own a 13' CRV. Honda warranty 5/60. Tranny blew at 4/70. And it was maintained. Coincidence ???? I disagree. Planned engineering ? I agree. If you're going to do this dipstickless stuff, do it to last the expected lifetime of the engine.

I have read about no engine oil dipsitck, As a "normal" BTOG reader, I know no oil dipstick to check would worry me. Worry would destroy my driving experience. NO trans dipstick is bad enough. What say you?

I don't know of any automatic read out system that can tell you the quality of motor oil. Some of us like to pull the dipstick to see how dark the oil is, to check for metallic bits, milky substances or excessive fuel odour.

If you've paid someone to change your oil, with a dash read out you can't even check to see if your new oil looks clean. Full yes, but clean no. You can still check to see if there is a new filter - except that many filters are now enclosed cartridges. How do you know if a service station has actually changed the oil? Yes, they reset the oil monitor, but did they actually change the oil? [In case you think I'm being paranoid there have been cases shown on Canadian documentaries where service stations didn't actually change the oil, or didn't change the oil filter at least.]

The more things change, the more I like my 2007 Honda Accord with its spare tire, manual transmission, V6 engine, motor oil dip stick, not DI, not stop/start, and not push button start. You do have to watch where you're going though. The good things missing are Nav and a back up camera. So there has been a tiny bit of positive change.

AAAAHHHHHH,,,,,felt good reading that ! Very descriptive and to the point. Yes, I'll admit, I miss a back up camera......but that's about it. I can live without Navigation. It's on the phones now. But to be honest, when the key fob battery dies, I'd be totally lost. I don't need that aggravation at my age. Sorry. And you're right, take it to a Quik Lube, you'll NEVER know if it was actually changed. How in the world can you physically check ???? You can't . Those quik lube joints are doin the happy dance right about now. That's how they stay in business. Scammin people out of their money.

You're power steering was currently at 12:32 pm, in case you didn't know :) LOL
Yeah - so it appears!

Actually, the transmission is in Park, and in Sport Mode.

And no, the car doesn't have a dipstick from the factory, but there is a "special service tool" with graduations in mm that looks remarkably like a dipstick...

We have an Isuzu trooper with no oil dipstick. Guess what, it leaks trans fluid, then guess what pains you have to go through to add more trans fluid. And then also guess what happens when it gets low and people keep driving it.

The trans fails earlier mileage than it normally would.

Ultimately, I blame GM as that trans is a GM product, and I have learned to have great enmity towards all things GM.

My 2007 Honda Accord has 2 fully functioning key fobs. They both failed but using heavy duty tools I was able to loosen a tiny screw and open them up and replace the batteries. They're working just fine again. The original batteries lasted about 15 years so no complaints there.

But the gorilla that installed that tiny screw doesn't get my vote for citizen of the year. I had to jam a small screw driver onto the screw and hold the fob and screwdriver together in a vice (yes, literally in a vice) in order to loosen it. Why do they even need a screw?

You are SOOOOO lucky just to get the screws out after using gorilla glue on them. Surprised you didn't snap the head right off the screw ! I have 3 cars with keys and a fob. 1 Honda, 2 Toyota's. The Honda is the only one with a screw. I use anti-seize on the threads so I can get it back out. A lot of times, the screws rust in place from getting wet. The only reason I can think that Honda put a screw there is for stability. The Toyota fobs are separate from the key. I found that Panasonic batteries last the longest. I change them every 4 years, just in case.
