Are these garbage?

There's a 2014 w/49K 5 speed manual for sale near me.

A friend's daughter's needed struts real early. Sounds cheap to me.
The Nissan/Mitsubishi fusion is not regarded as healthy on this board.

Chatted with a guy who's Versa CVT went out but he's OK with the rest of the car.

WWBD (What Would BITOGers Do)?

I had a 2009 six speed versa 1.8 L engine. I sold it with 75,000 miles on it, it was an excellent car and I miss it fairly frequently. Trouble free, fuel efficient, Interior space was incredible. I sold it because safety ratings are not that great and I needed something bigger for my family.

I drove a 2015, which had BT standard. IIRC Versa with 5MT is as base as it gets--manual windows, locks.

I kinda liked the one I drove, it had a wonderful basic feel to it. Felt peppy enough. It was downhill from there though: basic drab black interior, and horrendous highway noise. Engine turns 3k on the highway--not that 3k is an issue--but it just drones on and and on, reminding you that you bought the most cheap car you could find.

I recall reading someplace that Nissan had issues with front springs breaking and popping tires. I got the impression that it was a second (third?) tier model and just not something I was willing to spend lots on.

IIRC to do spark plugs you have to drain the coolant and remove the intake manifold. Timing chain, though.

I think it is what it is,an economy car. Every co's eco car feels exactly the same to me. Versa,Yaris,Focus, etc.

I like them. But it seems the last few years have issues with the rod bearings not being torqued properly. It's a simple, basic car. I like it! Nothing to go wrong and absolutely cavernous interior!

The 2012+ generation has AC, which is nice.

Also, yes, the intake manifold has to come off to do spark plugs.

My sister has a 2011-ish one she bought new b/c of "carpocalypse" blocking her from finding any good used car.

She has CELs at under 100k, not a good sign, and the radiator fan comes on for about 5 seconds then off 5 seconds at idle. Not very good hysteresis nor engineering, IMO.

They are about as basic as economy cars get, and you will be reminded of that every time you drive it. I drove one for a while as a rental, I mean it will get you from A to B with good fuel economy. Reliability is hit or miss with these. Personally I would go for a Civic or Corolla before the Versa, if its a screaming deal and its in immaculate shape with perfect maintenance records than maybe. Just know it drives like an economy car...very numb and LOUD.

To supton: I went to the link and read the 5 page thread you started. It was good. I can see more clearly now that I was looking at a bottom of the cost ladder economy car. Funny I didn't see it that way in the first place.

This was going to be my next new car. At only $12K new, 5 speed manual trans, and no power locks or windows (a liability to me) I couldn't pass it up. I always buy these bottom of the barrel entry level cars and run them for a couple hundred thousand. They make me a lot of money. But having to remove the intake manifold to change spark plugs would be a deal breaker. I like changing spark plugs too much for that.

I see brand new ones advertised for $8,995 new all the time.

Go on Autotrader and search for price low to high.

The Versa is the lowest cost of ownership car right now. They are nothing fancy but that's what I like about them. I have a 16' with the 4 speed auto and I really like it. It's simply an appliance to me and gets A-B on the cheap. Those MT's are pretty reliable too.

Frankly I would spend the $$ on a 200[789] ish yaris before I would buy a Versa.

I have a lot more confidence in Toyota's ability to make a quality (talking reliability) econobox, than I do nissan.
