Not my car but I paid for half of the oil test.

I Have heard if you never check or change the oil the nissan leaf gear box they can start making noise around 160,000 to 180,000 miles.
Don't know if it makes noise cause the fluid is shot and the bearing are going out or the fluid had leaked out over 10 to 11 years. At 7 years and 70,000 miles mine appeared to still be at least 90% full. From what I can see if it was only 1/2 full it would be plenty of oil.
I changed mine at 70,000, but I dumped the oil in with the ice engine oil before I thought hey I should get it tested.

I was reading the related oil change post over at MyNissanLeaf. I posted there also in the other EVs subforum because the gear reducers are nearly identical in design other than that the Kona does not have any magnetic particle retention. The analyses data are not too wildly difference except that the Leafs have many more miles.

It's a great example of the benefits of having a magnetic drain plug. I've just added two on my Kona like the Leaf has even though the majority of the damage to bearings and gears has already occurred by 19,500 km.

That first gear box oil change probably should happen between 20,000 and 50,000 miles.

With no magnetic drain plug you can't win. I tell Kona owners at change at 1,000 km as a balance between generation of break-in debris and that debris getting ground to dust. Every oil change in a Kona has been black and 2 were done early, at 2,500 miles (US) and 3,700 km (Australia).

Yeah the leaf is all electric and still has a gear reduction box and oil.
Teslas also have gearboxes and a spin-on filter. Supposedly Dex 6 is the fill. Now I might have given @JeffKeryk ideas to do a spill and fill on his Model 3 with MaxLife or Red Line.

What fluid is Nissan calling for on that Leaf? Nissan-Matic J/K/S or just plain Dex 3/Matic-D?

This is excellent info. Reason being I have been wondering about having the gear oil changed on my E-Golf (~66k miles) but the consensus on the very quiet E-Golf forum was to leave it alone since it is not really exposed to heat and wear should be limited since its a single speed box with no shifting action.

Now I am sure the stealership will look at me sideways if I ask about this so I'll check with this good indy in Atlanta that services the TDI and see what they say. The indy will at least look into the details versus the dealer who will probably tell me there is no gearbox or oil to change.

The original oil had 70,000 miles on it, that test did not look so great. I did it's second oil change and test with 37,000 miles on the oil, forgot to post it. 3 to 5 year oil changes aren't too bad. This was sumer 2022. I have put about 15,000 on it since then.

My 2012 Leaf battery was shot at 60k miles. Range was ~20 miles.

I had no idea you could change the oil. That’s neat!
The secret is don't live in a real hot climate and don't leave the battery sitting at 100% charge all day or days at a time.
It gets into the 100s most days here but it cools down to the upper 60s most nights.

Can anyone tell me what fluid, and how much it takes, for a 2022 leaf gearbox. Any other fluids to change in it?
