My brother just purchased a 2001 Infiniti I30t. It is speced for Nissan D-matic ATF. I want to do a couple drain and refills for him, and I'm unsure whether or not a Dexron III can or should be used instead of D-matic. I want to use what is best for the auto and price, within reason, is not an issue. But what is an issue is that I don't often get access to his car since he lives a few hours away and I want whatever is in there to last. I'm hoping I can use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF instead of the matic-D.

Does anyone know M1 ATF is a good substitute for matic-D?

Thanks.

My maxima is speced for Matic-D too, I have used quality DexronIII since warranty expired. Recently, I switched to Mercon-V/DexronIII ATF from Chevron and I must say the transmission loves it. This fluid cured the following problems.

1) Banging into grear from 2->1.
2) Sometimes erratic shift points vs RPM.
3) Lossened the shifter.
4) No more grear hunting either up/down.

Good luck!!

FYI, Chevron Mercon-V/DexronIII is the same spec as their new Chevron MV ATF.

When I spoke to the Chevron tech rep, he told me the fears MerconV has caused in some transmissions, that is why they named their MerconV as their new MV ATF. He also told me the local lube shops take the MV ATF in 55G drums, and Chevron sees no need to market them in either quarts/5G pails since they alreay have MerconV in that quantities....

If you are interested in additional information checkout their MSDS sheet for both Mercon V and MV ATFs.

M1 ATF is an excellent substitute for D-matic.

Any Dexron III-h can also be used. Your location has cold winters. You'd benefit from a blend or full synthetic if in your budget. Mercon-V's and multivehicle ATFs are your typical blends and priced well. Amsoil, Mobil1, Redline, RoyalPurple......are some of the synthetics to cosider.

If you're going to use M1 try to get the latest one, thats spec'd for DEXRON/MERCON & MERCON V. Amsoil synthetic ATF is also spec'd for Nissan matic D and it's marked on their web-site. Check both of their web-sites to determine which brand you perfer.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.

I will go with Mobil 1 ATF, the latest version with the multiple specs.

I'll change it twice, I think it'll drain about 4 quarts each time, so two drain/refills will get approx. 70% of the fluid replaced.

I use Amsoil in my '99 maxima and am happy with the results. I'm sure M1 will do just fine for you.

Why not do a drain/fill followed by a cooler line flush instead of the double drain/fill? this will get near 100% fluid exchange with 11 quarts, and is easy to do on the maxima/i30.

M1 should work fine, probably better than that overpriced stuff from Nissan. Consider doing a drain and fill every 15-30K to keep the fluid fresh and the add pack strong.

I wouldn't waste the money on Mobil 1 ATF, or any other synthetic ATF. There is a member on here that has done ATF analysis on his B15 Sentra. This transmission shears every ATF is has used, including the Mobil 1 ATF. It is best to use a inexpensive Dextron III or the Matic D, and change it out every 10K-15K. Doing three drains and refills gives you about 88% new fluid.

I found a place that sells the Matic D for about $3.00 a quart. IM me if you want to know the place.

How many miles were on your car and what was the service history? I know these transmissions are weak and the 1-2 shift blows.
