Not room enough for the larger canister?

The thread ID wasn't correct. I even checked them with an inside mike, and all but the 51344 had the same inside diameter. Thread pitch appears to be correct. Might I have an "anamolous" filter?

The following filters I have used and installed without a hitch:

NAPA Silver 21356, NAPA Gold 1356, Amsoil SDF13, CarQuest 85356, Amsoil SDF20, Wix 51356.

Clarcor Corp. owns Baldwin & Hastings. Baldwin's tech folks told me that the Baldwin and Hastings filters are identical, and that they make the lower quality Casite. They make the Amsoil filter, Baldwin says to contact Amsoil about the quality, and Amsoil says that it's better than Baldwin/Hastings. I've heard supposition that the Amsoil filter has the Baldwin HPG glass media that's only in a few Baldwin filters, and that the Amsoil filter might have better quality rubber parts for longer installed life without leaks...who knows?

Wix #51334 and #51344 have 20x1.5mm threads.
Nissan filters have 3/4-16 inch threads.
While the thread forms are close, they are not the same.
Thanks.

Spitfire, as I pointed out in the other Honda-Wix thread, the cross-reference for my Nissan calls for a Wix 51356 which has the same threads as the 51344.

It's an '03 2.5L 4-cyl (Sentra Spec-V). This may be far different from the venerable 2.4L.

Nissan changed their thread specs on several engines in the late to mid 90s.

My Nissan 97 D21 (hardbody) 2.4 I4 had the 3/4 - 16 threads. My 98 D22 Frontier has the 20 x 1.5mm thread size. A 2004 Maxima has the same thread size so I assume they are sticking with this design.

The Wix 51344 does fit my '01 Frontier's KDXXX (2.4 L four-cylinder) engine very well. I plan on using this filter in lieu of the Amsoil SDF20. I still do not know why the 51344 did not fit the '03 PathFinders VQ engine, since the SDF20 and the Wix 51356 fit both engines just fine.

I will purchase another Wix 51344 for the PathFinder and see if maybe we had a filter with rough threads or a thread diameter that may have been slightly under-radius.

BTW, and as an FYI,

And to say Bror was correct,

The Wix 51344 filter WILL fit the 3.5 L V6 Nissan engine with a small amount of re-engineering of the Alternator bracket.

Hmmmm. I kinda like my alternator bracket the way it is. I've settled into using the "elongated thimble" filter, and will just do intermediate changes if used oil analysis clear the way for longer OCIs.

ekpolk, you might check out the Amsoil SDF-36 filter.

Thread: 20x1.5mm
O.D.: 2.92
Height: 4.803
O.D. Gasket: 2.46
I.D. Gasket: 2.21
By-Pass Valve: 7-9psi

Filter area approximately equal to the PL244458 I've cut open.

Thanks, I'll look into that one. Do you happen to have the nomenclature for a same-sized retail-available filter so I can eyeball it and get hands-on before ordering from Amsoil sight unseen? I can read the dimensions, yes, but it's still not quite the same as seeing one in the flesh.

ekpolk,

The Amsoil SDF 20 is the oversized alternative to the "thimble sized" SDF13.

The Bosch 3323/M1 110/NAPA Gold 1356 is a longer alternative to the short OEM with the same diameter.

The NAPA Gold 1334 is about an inch shorter than the Purolator 24458 which I believe is a primary Honda replacement filter.

I believe the closest match you will find to the SDF-36 is:

Baldwin B199
Wix 51347
Purolator L20073

However, the gaskets are bigger on those ~2.74".

Baldwin also cross references the SDF-36 to the B168 and the B161-S. But again slightly different gasket sizes. My guess is Amsoil chose the gasket size to cover multiple applications.

Amsoil website also stated that if you can use the SDF-13, you can use the SDF-20. And if you can use the SDF-20, you can use the SDF-36. I've used it in place of the PL14459, PL24458, L24458, M1-104, HP-1004, with no problems.

427Z06,

Is your application a Honda? The reason that I ask is that I have a 2k Maxima and 2004 Honda Odyssey. I am using the NAPA Gold 1334 on both vehicles. This filter is short/wide versus the Purolator 24458 which is the same diameter but about an +/- inch longer.

Could you post the url for Amsoil SDF or PM it to me? I would consider using the Baldwin equivalent to the Amsoil SDF since I can get them from a Truck Stop up the road.

I was aware of both the thimble and super-thimble sizes for the VQ (SDF-13 and 20 in Amsoil nomenclature). I will definitely dig a little deeper, as I am not satisfied with either of these. Even super-thimble would drop inside a 12 oz soda can with ample room to spare.

Try this web site for SDF cross references.

For example, if I enter: PL24458
It returns: SDF36

If I enter: 51334
It returns: SDF20

We have some Amsoil reps here that may be able to hook you up with what you want.

John in the ATL, yes I use the SDF-36 on a Honda V6 application.

427Z06,

Thanks for the link. I am using the NAPA Wix 1334 on the Odyssey V6 and I glad to know that a larger filter will work such as the SDF36.

I will try to cross reference the Wix and Baldwin equivalents of the SDF 36 since I have a hard time paying the $10+ for Amsoil and Mobil 1 filters.

I bought 5 of the SDF-36s off a web site for ~$7 each. Don't remember if it was a special sale or not. You might consider doing a web search and/or asking one of the BITOG Amsoil guys if they can get a good price for you.
