So I'm going to bite the bullet on the FAR and MIR on nextgen. The oil will be used in the 2012 focus with the DI engine. For a few bucks more I can get the maxlife, which, everyone will agree that it has a much more stout add pack than the conventional. The pds for maxlife says it can be used in new cars and meets all the requirements. Even though its not a high mileage motor, what is everyone's thought on running it in the focus since its a great deal and better add pack? OR should I just get the regular conventional since the OCI will be 5K max and probably about 3K for the next 2 OCI, and not worrying about switching away from a high mileage motor oil.

I've run both styles and prefer the MaxLife. The only reason for that being that it has a good dose of molybdenum and a number of engines that I've owned in the past (including both of the 4-cylinder engines that I've owned) have been notably quieter on high-moly oils. My previous favorite was Havoline/Chevron when it had all the moly in it. MaxLife (in either regular or NextGen flavor) has some moly in it and it's enough to cause the 4-cylinder in our CR-V to be quieter on that oil than any other oil I've used in it, including regular Valvoline (white bottle).

Nextgen Maxlife. It is good stuff! My brother and I both use it. However, he has been running it since day one, and his motor is spotless. Both of our vehicles are smooth and quiet on it as well.

Fine oil. Get it while it is on sale. I have no brand loyalty, I truly believe all the majors are good and will use them all when they can be had at a decent cost.

One other comment: if you are looking for it in 5W-20 flavor, Walmart has been the only place at which I've found it. None of my local Advance Auto, Auto Zone, or O'Reilly stores carries MaxLife NextGen in 5W-20. I don't know what grade your new Focus uses, but the lack of MLNG 5W-20 at the retail parts stores has cut me out of the rebate happiness with this oil.

Excellent point. It shows up that my local autozone has it. Picture is wrong though.

PepBoys has/had 5qts of NextGen Maxlife 5W20 on "sale" for $30 with a Purolator Classic filter. They run their mail in store gift card promotion. I didn't bother. AutoZone and O'Reilly usually have conventional NextGen 5W20 in quart bottles, which are not economical to buy unless Valvoline stuff is on sale this month. O'Reilly's $20 FAR promotion already ended while autozones will be running until the end of October. The best FAR deal on NextGen oil is at Advance Auto Parts. Unfortunately, AAP does not have 5W20 NextGen in any flavor or bottle size. Some stores may still have old stock, but the web site has already been updated to show that they no longer carry this grade weeks ago.

I have a '12 Focus too. Planning to get a used oil analysis? I'm interested to see how much fuel might be in the factory fill oil.

For a newbie, please define FAR and MIR. They're not on the official BITOG acronym definition page.

Free after rebate and mail in rebate. The factory fill has already been dumped and filled with motorcraft again. Car has a total of 2500 miles on it right now. I will get a used oil analysis after the next OCI or 2, not worth a used oil analysis on a engine breaking in as you can't establish a wear pattern yet. But eventually, yes, I will be doing a used oil analysis.

Ah-ha, thanks. Yeah I understand about the wear, I was just hoping to get an early indication of fuel dilution and oil life remaining (viscosity, TBN) with this DI engine after 7,500 miles or so. I changed the factory fill at 1,500 miles and plan to do the next change at 9,000 miles and will probably get a used oil analysis done at that point. Unless someone else's used oil analysis shows that this new engine dumps a lot of fuel in the oil in which case I'll change it sooner. Ford recommended OCI is 10,000 miles.

I changed with MC at 1500 miles as well.
Personally, I'd dump it before that for a couple reasons.
1. There is still a lot of break in metals floating around in the oil.
2. I haven't seen a used oil analysis from a DI engine that has shown an oil could go further than 7,500 miles. Most agree that on DI engines, 5-6k OCI is about the limit, even with synthetic, due to fuel dilution problems destroying oils in that short amount of mileage. My ecoboost sure does dump alot of fuel into the oil after 6K run.

Ended up having to go with the conventional because the 5w-20 was 5qt jugs only and not on sale.

Because the car calls for 5w-20 and I'm not going to give them any reason to void a warranty claim, if that ever happens. Plus, I see no advantage to 5w30 over 5w-20 in this application.
