Special front loader detergent? Would that be the ones that have that HE symbol on it, think it stands for high efficiency.

There are rebates available for buying a high efficiency washer, usually classified as Tier 2 and 3. According to the information packet I have, Tier 2 has a Modified Energy Factor (MEF) of 2.0 or greater and a Water Factor (WF) of 6.0 or less. And Tier 3 has MEF of 2.2 or greater and a WF of 4.5 or less. The list that is included show mostly Bosch, Frigidaire, Kenmore, LG. The Staber seems like a good choice.

I found that most washers for the front load have the door that is left hinge. Are there any that are right hindged? I don't think they are switchable like refrigerator doors.

I bought my mom a Maytag Neptune when they first came out- other than the mold/mildew problem with the door gasket it ran flawlessly for several years when we sold her house. I would probably steer clear of it myself, though. This particular series of washers have had some very bad problems indeed.

I've had a Frigidaire front-loader for about four years now and last year it started to make horrendous noises during the extract cycle. Still runs and doesn't leak though.

Not sure what my replacement front-loader will be- maybe a Miele (top-notch) or a commercial-grade machine. I LOVE front-loaders!!!!!

As sprintman mentioned, the Mieles are outstanding. Getting parts/repairs might be a tad more difficult, assuming they're needed. If you got the money for one I'd go for it.
