I have a new 2014 chevy silverado with the 5.3. It has close to 3000 miles and the oil has turned very dark I think pretty quickly from a few hundred miles ago. Is this normal? And does the darker oil color mean dirty, contaminated or broken down? The factory fill is dexos 0w20.

I'm also a fan of early oil changes. That being said, oil color is not always a good indicate of oil life. Some additives will darken or become opaque when heat is applied to them, making the oil go dark. If these additives are being used, then the oil will look dark but still be completely serviceable for a long time.

IMO, change the first few oil changes close together, 2k miles, keep all the break-in particles flushed out, just use cheap oil, whatever you can find. Then buy a top synthetic and run the [censored] out of it.

No need to. Changing early may make you feel better, but we only use the OLM in our fleet GM V8's and we get 500k miles out of some of them. The V8's have never had the OLM issues that many smaller displacement GM engines have had.
That 5.3 is easy on oil, expect it to run nearly forever...

I had a 2005 Silverado with the 5.3 V8 that I purchased with 67k on it. I ran group III synthetic and used the OLM with mostly Bosch or Wix oil filters.
Traded it in with 113k and got above KBB because it was in great condition and ran smooth.
Swap out the dino, put in synthetic, DON'T use the E-Core design AC Delco filters (Bosch, Wix, Fram Ultra are all good), and set the OLM. You will stay in warranty and have 7k-10k OCI's depending on your driving habits.

If I had a new truck like yours, I would just change the oil. And I would use an AC Delco filter, e-core is fine to use.
E core Delco filter is fine, and is what I would use. Just follow the maintenance minder and change when it tells you, nothing more, nothing less.
