I guess this is like the joke about Starbucks being so common that they’re across the street from another one.

Yes, you read that correctly. Trader Joe’s now has two Sherman Oaks locations directly across from each other on bustling Riverside Avenue, a couple of minutes off U.S. Highway 101 in the San Fernando Valley. The original location at 14119 Riverside Drive is a stand-alone building that has been operating as a Trader Joe’s since 1973, tiny parking lot and all. Conversely, the recently opened second outpost, situated at 14140 Riverside Drive (cheekily listed on the company’s website as “Sherman Oaks too”), has a much larger footprint in a mixed-use residential building. You could, if you timed the crosswalk light correctly, touch the front door of each location in under a minute.

We have a situation here where it's been rumored for a while that a convenience store will have a location soon on different sides of the same state highway. Currently, if you're going east bound, it's a PITA to get into the store and then get back going east bound. So I would understand in that situation a little more than this Trader Joe's situation.

Seems strange for the area.

I would say, don't expect the old location to remain and they'll close it down at some point in the future. Then I remember these (2) Speedway locations that are about 50 yards apart:

They look further apart than they really are on the map. The one in the lower corner takes up the whole lot, bringing it right to the NE corner and the other one (that 'street' shown wrapping around it isn't real) is much closer to the street (Central Ave) than the image shows.

That is interesting as Trader Joe's FINALLY opened a 2nd store in Bellingham a couple weeks ago. The first one, the lot was packed every open hour. The 2nd TJ is quite nice and LARGE PARKING LOT. Both will stay, I would say 4-5 miles apart (just a guess)

Colorado Springs currently has only one location for about 10 10yrs, and in the same complex as Costco. it is a nightmare. Finally, they are opening a second one like 2-3mls from us. Hopefully big parking lot.

i remember there used to be a intersection in downtown Van BC that had a SB on all corners . if there is enough biz to support , then why not . In my area there is a plaza that has 3 SB in it . one inside a market and 2 stores .

I can see that they probably either are too full, have a good deal on new lease, or the older one's lease is about to expire, and they won't negotiate, or they are selling some slightly different stuff in each store.

Starbucks used to do that a lot. There was one time either a Home Depot or Target did that in Daly City / Colma.

We have 2 Circle K convenience/gas stations diagonally across from one another at the same intersection. Both usually busy all the time. Depending on which direction you are going (to or from the beach) whichever one is easier to get in and out of on a busy road is the one to use that day.

This reminds me of a set of Shell gas stations near my old office. There are three of them, all of which are Shell-corporate owned and operated.

I am sure they were different brands at one point, but they've all been Shells as long as I've been here. The Southeast corner has an ancient Jack in the Box location, otherwise I am sure a Shell station would be there also. Ha.

The Trader Joe's here has been PACKED since it opened in 2014. To the point that I've never been able to park there. Always have to park at the store next door I have no doubt they could open a second location a few miles away and still be busy.

Is that the closest to BC? I seem to recall a guy who resold stuff from TJ's in BC. Hired other people to do it, wore disguises, etc. since they were on to him that he was reselling. I did understand that he paid all duties though, although I thought US/Mexican made products were duty free under NAFTA.

I remember stopping there on the way to BC since it seemed like the last city for all big US retail like Target and Costco.

Yes a bit closer to border

Trader Joes not having parking is almost a meme. Seems like they do it on purpose to create scarcity to encourage shoppers to buy more if they're lucky enough to get a spot.

I don't play that game, and never shop there. They're cousins with Aldi, which is cheaper, and has ample parking, so I go there instead.

Off topic: On the Maine Turnpike, long ago, there used to be a pedestrian tunnel under the highway between two rest area parking lots so people could go to the single restaurant on the opposite side.

From my understanding (TJ is my favorite store, beats Costco and other Asian supermarkets), TJ has a very small foot print and only sell the more popular and good deal products and skip the "we should carry it even if nobody buys them" products. They never expect to stock everything you want to buy, only stock what they can get a good deal for you and them. For this reason their sqft is small for the revenue they have and they typically use up a much bigger portion of their parking in the strip mall they are in. They are probably one of the biggest anchor in a strip mall / shopping mall.

We don't have Aldi here, but to be fair TJ was never the cheapest store (Walmart is) but their products' quality are typically better and the value is there. I think Costco has value too but often times just similar price to TJ yet you don't have to buy in big bulk in TJ.

I'll see your 2 Speedways and raise you 3 Speedways. This is in Dyer, IN (Route 30 and Calumet), the distance from the two end Speedways is about a half mile, and all 3 are open and have been for years. This doesn't account for a BP station that's to the west of this grouping. I guess it helps that the stations are all just east of the IL/IN border, and in IL that's Crook county so gas is insane compared to Indiana prices.
