OK, this is a "new to you" car. Do you have the maintenance history? Can you get a CarFax?

What does the filler cap and inside the valve cover look like? What condition is the PCV in?

If anything looks even mildly off, I'd add a can of BG109 to the oil change and go 5,000 miles and do it again.

ST Synthetic is OK, but there are other choices. This is a pretty nice car and it will run a while, so run the current oil and see what the consumption is, and then make a plan.

ToughGuard filters prolly OK (I use them). Motorcraft certainly OK.

OP - how often do you change your oil? What kind of usage does the car see - city, highway, miles per year? If you stay w 5000 mile OCIs, I'm sure the SuperTech conventional is fine - along with any filter spec'd for the car. Any full synthetic should go 10k with normal driving as long as you keep it topped off. If all your driving is stop and go, short trip stuff - change a little more often.

I think Supertech synthetic and a Motorcraft filter would be a good choice for this car.

+1

Like others have said... go with a Fram Ultra for the oil filter. For the oil I would go with Motorcraft made by Conoco Phillips or Castrol Magnatec. I had a 08 Ford Fusion 3.0 SEL and if I know now what I didn't then..... that's exactly what I would have done. Motorcraft or Castrol Magnatec with a Fram Ultra. I did use a Fram Ultra though:) I just didn't know how good Magnatec and Motorcraft were. I ran Valvoline Synpower or Castrol gold bottle. Which were and are very good. But I could have just run those other two and been just as well too.

Stay with the Motorcraft filter, one of the best you can buy for the money. I use Mobil 1 0W-20 EP in my mother's Mercury Milan (rebadged Fusion), but it's a hybrid. I believe they are not really picky on oil, but you can get very good syns using rebates for cheap...

Yeah that's true CharlieBauer. But if your car or truck isn't burning oil I think it really does not have that much effect. I have run some oils with a higher NOACK and it hasn't changed anything in my oil level. I haven't lost 15% of my oil using them.
Now, if your car or truck are burning oil then I think it may be best to get a less volatile oil in which to run.

standard driving... some city some highway, probably will see around 10k miles a year.

i think i'll stick with the motor craft filter (which is an FL-500s) and motorcraft oil. thanks for all the input guys!
