I recently sold off my 09 ext cab and ended up buying a more family friendly 2002 1500HD crew cab. I'm due for my first oil change soon and am having a hard time deciding what to go with. A little background truck has 111,000 easy miles on it. Old lady driven the first 90,000 and the second 20,000 a guy that was proud of his stuff had it. Won't be a daily driver, 500 miles a month??, will be used to tow occasionally but not exclusively, currently has no knocks, smoke or oil consumption issue.

Trying to decide what's best:

1) Parts Master 5w30 synthetic ($4 qt at my local auto parts store and my trusted mechanic uses this oil for his stuff. I have used the Conventional version with good results previously)
2) Valvoline Synpower/PP/QSUD
3) Conventional oil (most likely Valvoline conventional just because it's my preference)

Oil filter would either be an AC Delco or Wix

I'm a 3,000 mile oci person too, with that few miles a month it would take me a long time to hit the olm and I'm not comfortable going that amount of time on oil or a filter. So would the added expense of the synthetic be worth it in my situation based on driving habits, the fact that Conventional already has some syn in it and my oil

I'd use Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 & a Wix or Fram Ultra

It's rated for gasoline engines. I'm running it in the 1970 VW Beetle right now.

Whatever quality synthetic (Synpower/Napa, QS, PP, M1, etc.) is available on sale at $2-$3 per quart during the year. Stock up when they show up. You should have no problem keeping stocked for 2 oil changes per year.

The dino's don't seem to go on sale as often (Valvoline conventional, Pennzoil conventional, Castrol GTX, Mobil Super 5000, etc.) but they are good values too at $2-$3/qt. I'm a 3K-4K/6 month OCI guy too and you really can't go wrong with whatever quality syn/dino you choose.

Anything you listed will work well for you.
Pick one. 3k will not tax any of the oils you listed.
I have the LQ4 6.0 in my 2500HD - purchased used in 2011 with 99k miles on it.
Personally I plan on only running synthetic oil in mine from now on , due to an oil pump bypass valve sticking open a few years ago. Had to replace the pump and it wasn't cheap.
Next oil change for it will be some Pennzoil Ultra 5W40 I purchased on the cheap at this past Autozone oil clearance sale.

That makes complete sense, since he offered that as an option.

Do you even think, when you post here?

You are a 3k guy pick anything run it and don't worry. I have 50+ 6.O I take care of on synblend @ 5k oci and they are all well above 100k milage. At 3k pick whatever oil is rated for your ride and cheapest and don't lose a thought

The 4.8/5.3/6.0/6.2 family is simply not hard on oil. Follow the OLM with whatever syn is on sale and I can assure you they last a LONG time.

My vote goes for one of those synthetics with a FRAM Tough Guard. 500 miles/month is 6,000/year. Just change it yearly. If you absolutely have to change the oil every 3,000 then just use a conventional & cheap filter.

whatever you put in, just know that the chevy 6.0 does not care. it will run on chicken grease and give you hundreds of thousands of worry free miles. plenty of examples out there pushing 250k and beyond.

He's brand new here, had ideas of using dollar store oil, and wants to do 3,000 mile OCI's

Do you think he knows what he wants? No, so I offered my opinion on a public forum. If you don't like my opinion, please don't read my posts.

Also, other people recommended Mobil 1 and it isn't in his list either. Why aren't you nagging at them?

I agree with the others on 3000 miles is a waste for any oil including conventional. The OLM on my 01 Silverado HD typically goes off between 4800 and 5000. I am now going up to 11k miles for the OCI (but running fairly expensive Motul 8100 5W30 to get there) and the used oil analysis reports are showing no problems at all.

The thing to watch out for on these is ring sticking which causes more oil consumption. Use the first two OCI's to monitor for consumption. IF you have have more than you're willing to put up with it may be worthwhile to run a crankcase cleaning interval with MMO, Seafoam, Rislone, ZMax, or Kreen, etc. to get varnish out of the rings and restore oil consumption to a reasonable level. I personally have gone the MMO route with no complaints.

I had previously heard that the Parts Master oil was produced by Ashland and is a very similar or the same oil as Valvoline in both syn and conventional. Just not an oil that there is a lot of info out there on. Probably somewhat obvious given my preference to Valvoline but if that's the case I have no problem running the Parts Master oil like I had in my previous truck. I also wouldn't consider it "dollar store" oil, maybe more of a house/store brand oil.

Mobil I shy away from. Great oil based on all kinds of tests and testimonials on the web but know a couple guys who have recently developed consumption issues with Mobil 1. They have both since switched to PP and seem to be having better luck with that.

I know a lot you guys run a lot of miles on oil and are fine with it and you can tell me all you want I'm wasting my money and oil changing it early but I for some reason just can't get myself to buy into it or trust it.
