First, the important details: Oil being used and weight - Amsoil AMO 10w-40

2008 Goldwing with 14,000 miles. It is a HPNA model, meaning premium audio, comfort package, Navigation, and ABS. Was bought new in May '09, has only been in use for 3 years.

Paint color is Cabernet Red metallic.

Picked it up in Memphis, TN last Wednesday. It was a birthday gift to myself.

I tend to prefer quieter motorcycles when I'm trying to take a nap on a Sunday afternoon...

But no, straight pipes are apparently much more important than that.

I've ridden many bikes in my lifetime. Some a bit loud but not terribly so. I honestly enjoy enjoyed riding when my focus was more external and not on pipes. Makes for a better long distance ride as well when things are quieter. As a side note....on a trip a couple of years ago in Wyoming and South Dakota (not Sturgis), I visited several smaller historical towns that had not changed much in many years. Trouble was any time I tried to relax and walk the towns, noisey bikes with very loud pipes (being made louder by riders seeking attention) would make the walk unnerving. I basically came to realize what an impact loud pipes have on others.
Nice bike....enjoy the ride.

I've never understood this fascination (obsession?) that some have with making a motorcycle absolutely as loud as possible.

Neither have I. It is an obnoxious noise.

It is my opinion that there are a few reasons why this has occurred. I'll agree that when riding a bike it's nice to hear the engine revving between gears. I think what happened is that the manufacturers and after market folks decided louder is better as a way of selling product. Many bike consumers, especially cruiser style riders, developed a desire to be louder than the next guy. Why? Well, many riders crave attention. If you notice, some riders will pull in the clutch and rev up the throttle just to garner attention (especially in the vicinity of people). Same with garish outfits and the 'outlaw' culture. I'm not trying to put it down mind you, just expressing my opinion. I will be honest and say that as I've gotten older (matured) I see these types of riders as rather comical figures. Of course, they are annoying to me because of the loud noise.....but as long as no laws are broken, that's just something that must be tolerated. I do wish however that these loud piped riders would take into consideration that there is a segment of the population that does not appreciate the noise as much as they do.

Bikes have always fascinated me. I would like to own one one day. That Goldwing looks nice, are they pretty heavy compared to a sport type bike?

About the loud pipes..I don't get it either. Nothing is more confusing than seeing a tough old biker full leathers, stop his bike, remove his tiny helmet and then pull the earplugs out of his ears...what's the point??

THIS ^^^^^^^

Growing up I walways felt the quieter the car or bike the more luxurious it is... or good, or advanced, or whatever. never could figure out load exhausts and burnouts etc.
