My wife and I just brought home an 06 tundra, 4 door, 2wd, v8. It is a wonderful vehicle-- comfortable, drives great, easily the nicest vehicle I've ever owned. It doesn't have many options but I'm not an options kind of guy.

I haven't worked on a toyota since the 80's. It has 106,000 miles on it. The dealer did an OC to be nice but everything else is untouched. the coolant is red in color.

So-- the "new car" ritual must begin soon... ATF, PS flush, brake bleed, coolant if needed, axle.

1. any issues with amsoil in this ATF? I'd rather put a premium syn in there.

2. same for PS...

3. It doesn't have an owner's manual... does anyone know what axle lube these call for? as best as I know, it's an open diff.

I've always wanted a truck, and had to wait for the 4-doors to get old enough to be in my price range. Very happy with this purchase. Thanks for your input--- I'm just not very familiar with toyotas.

Vehicle has a timing belt and can handle 10-15K OCI easily with long life oil. I think the timing belt interval is 90-100K.

I found the dealer is the best place to have it changed (water pump too) since they are most familiar with this not too numerous engine; most indy shops wanted 800-1000, dealer < 1/2 that.

I care for one owned by a friend of mine. (2003) She had her Tundra belt changed at 125K about (2) years ago; I imagine there is a large safety factor built into the service life.

I hope the timing belt has been done. At that mileage probably someone wanted to sell it before doing some of the major maintainance (ie ball joints, tie rods, etc), which I've done to my 01 Tundra at the 100,000 mi mark.

The transmission on this truck is a "sealed" unit, no dipstick, calls for WS fluid.

PS fluid: Any syn DexIII or DexVI is fine. I have Valvoline DexVI in my PS system.

For the rear end it might have a LSD diff. Look for a sticker (or remnants of a sticker) above the fill hole at the rear diff. Owners manual calls for a 90W fluid, but I would recommend RP 75W90 if you have a LSD unit (or not). Unit takes about 4qts.

Didn't know tundra V8's had a timing belt.... um wow

I would definably put that on my todo list.

congrats on the new wheels

I hope he asked for the receipts for TB change. I could care less if the dealer or private party said it was done.

Congrads on the new ride!

The last place I worked at had a TON of Toyota's with the 4.7 and they saw HARD use. They lasted with any 5w30 changed around 8,000 miles on the average OCI.

Just check the belt and make sure its done around 100k to be safe.

I'd be more concerned with just changing the fluids with what is recommended. No need to put in anything different since the 4.7 V8 is a excellent strong engine.

Take care, Bill

PS: I've removed some posts that were off topic and bashing if some are wondering where their posts are.

Only the tunda 4.7L has a timing belt, the 4.6L and 5.7L both have chains.

The transmission has a life time fluid, but i would still change it. The toyota calls for WS fluid. I wouldn't substitute anything else either.

The transmission has a fill plug, drain plug, and a check plug. The fill plug is on the side (usually passengers), the drain plug is flush on the pan, the check plug is recessed in the pan. Drain, fill, warm up too the appropriate temp for you model and year. Then pull the check plug, you should have a slow stream coming out. Re install the plug. If noting comes out, add another quart.

EDIT: Ask the dealer for the specific diff fluid it takes, long story short, there where a lot of options.

You can go to tundrasolutions.com and learn a lot about your new truck. If you have no maintenance history, then there is a lot you can do to protect your investment. The highest priority would be the timing belt and water pump. Have the coolant flushed, or you can drain and fill it a few times yourself. Change the PCV valve and air filter (clean the MAF sensor and throttle body while you're in there too). The brakes are easy to bleed with any DOT3 or 4. The rear diff is a piece of cake with the fill and drain plug (remove fill plug first). You can either flush or do multiple suction and fills on the PS fluid. The spark plugs are probably due for a change too (easy to do yourself). Flush the transmission fluid now! If the shocks are OEM, then the need replaced (you will enjoy the better handling and I recommend Bilstein).

There are excellent DIY threads on tundrasolutioms.com. Try to do as much as you can or ask a friend to help and you will save mucho dinero. Enjoy your new truck. I've owned mine for almost 13 years now and still enjoy it as much as the day I bought it...best vehicle I've ever owned!

Thank you for the info! I'm not afraid to do the work myself but didn't realize it used a TB! I'll get in there and verify ... will probably farm that one out if it does.

I'm a fan of ATF changes-- as long as there's no special procedure requiring tools I don't have, it will happen. WS fluid; ok.

really not too much too this- it's a pretty simple vehicle to get into by the looks of it. Do the yota folks favor a certain spark plug on these?

I have a copy of the factory service manual for my !echo!; I was about $140 IIRC. Worth twice that IMHO. It has paid for itself numerous times. Recommended.

critic, sweet, awesome, thank you!

guys I'm feeling good about this-- I've never owned a truck before-- spent this afternoon working in the yard and it was sooo much easier to dump all the debris than using the jeep I traded in!! no more vacuuming own the back!!

as a follow-up, the local toyo dealer did have records on the vehicle. recent ATF /flush/, brake job, brake bleed/refill, oil change, air filter change. original TBelt. they quoted $750 for belt w/ water pump & serp belts & new coolant, which is very reasonable.

That takes out many of the items I had questions about-- leaving me with:

1. PS drain/fills
2. diff drain/fill (yes it IS lsd, yay!)
3. spark plugs

It really doesn't need much, and is a joy to drive. a little nervous about gas mileage-- my goal is to hold 18, which would match the jeep I traded. that could prove a challenge. the jeep was lifted and had larger tires, I'm keeping the truck stock. It will need new tires next year.

Meep, where did you buy this truck? And is it dark charcoal in color? It may be my co-worker's Tundra. He just traded it about a month ago on a 2012 Civic. His had right at 106,000 miles on it.

Does it have a Salt Life decal in the rear window? His was a 2006, dark charcoal, 2WD 4-door model. It had the 5-star billet-looking 16" wheels with 265/75R16 Firestone Destination LE tires, pretty new still.

Hokie--- hah!

I'm in north AL. no-- it's white with lt gray interior. it has 4 odd tires on it, and is equipped with a kinda gaudy brush guard that I can flex with one hand which will probably come off soon...jewelry.

Getting the TB and h2o pump done in 2 days, so I can relax. it's a 90,000 interval and the serpentine belts look pretty rough.

I *love* this truck. never owned a truck. It's bigger than I need but the tacoma's command a high resale, a scary-high resale value!

Question-- I'm debating on keeping the bed open or making a tonneau (sp?) cover to go over it. What's the current data on best mpg?
