New Tires - '01 Frontier 4x4

I'm in the market for new tires, looking for recommendations. The original tire size is 265/55/17, however the only thing available in that size is OEM Firehawks, and they're expensive, so an alternate size must be used.

I currently have 275/55/17 Kumho Road Venture APT which have done fine. Just looking to try something new.

The truck is an '01 Supercharged Frontier 4x4, so the tires get worked hard at times. I'm looking for a tire of highway all season variety, I don't go off-road often. Severe weather (snow/ice) use is present in winter.

Suggestions / recommendations welcome!

Are Michelin LTX M/S available in the size that you need?

I'm in central Illinois, and the LTX performs very well in winter conditions.

I hate how Nissan puts odd ball size tires on their cars. I had the same problem with my 05 Sentra. You pretty much had to buy the OEM Firestone Firehawks. They were one of the most poorest performing tire I have ever driven on.

How about the General Grabber UHP? It looks like General has been putting out some good tires as of late.

If you are happy with 275/55-17, then there are several options.

There are other sizes that will fit your wheels too. Just stick with something that is rated for your weight capacity, rim width and is an overall diameter you are satisfied with.

I don't know about the firehawks, but OEM on my Frontier (01 SE)were General Grabber AW's I believe and they were downright scary in the wet. I don't wheel my truck and it will (for now) only see gravel roads at most for off pavement driving. I have the General UHP's tho since then and I like them a lot better, they probably aren't much quieter than the stock tires but are a much better tire. I researched them on tirerack.com and read reviews on them before I bought them. I have been pleasantly pleased with them and will probably buy them again if the price is right as it was the first time, when the time comes for new tires. I think I paid 103/each for them. They are a LOT better in the rain. However, I don't think they got good reviews for snow/ice unless it was light snow. Check with tirerack.com for reviews, but I purchased mine at discount tire.
