Alright, lemme have it. I will be picking up my new car on Monday. What would you do as far as oil is concerned. Here is the absolute stuff: 2005 Subaru STi. Stage 2 all around. Phoenix, AZ. 3-4 month OCI. Not more than 4000 miles a year (Won't drive much on summer days). Occasional track day for fun...not competition, but still aggressive driving.
Tell me the what/when/and especially why regarding what you believe I should do regarding this vehicle's engine oil. You can PM/email if ya want, but I will also check this post. Feel free to be lengthy

I read a comparison between the STI and the EVO. In it, the reviewers quoted Subaru as saying that the STI needs roughly 3000-6000 miles to break in. I don't remember the exact number, but it was in that ballpark.

Congrats on your car! It's my dream car!

If it's like the rest of the subarus in the used oil analysis section, you could use anything from baby oil to ear wax and return a stellar result.

redline, mobil 1, or amsoil synths 5W030 or 10w30 would be my guess.

Congrats on the STi, I've been enjoying my '05 STi since September or so. I'm currently sitting at 6,000 miles on the odometer and I'm running Motorcraft 5w30 semi-synthetic (2,500 OCI) after being less than thrilled with my first run of Mobil Drive Clean 5w30 ILSAC GF-4. My used oil analysis is located here: http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=002305

I'll be making the switch over to a full-synthetic oil at 10,000 miles (I'll likely run the Motorcraft 5w30 again at my 7,500 oil change), and my plan is to use "German Castrol" (GC) 0w-30. I'm also considering trying Mobil 1 0w-40 and also possibly Mobil 1 5w-40 (Truck & SUV formula). Once I'm running synthetic oil, my plan is to extend the OCI out to 5,000 miles with a factory Subaru oil filter. My STi is bone-stock, and is my daily driver. If I lived in Phoenix and tracked my STi, I'd probably skip the Mobil 1 0w-40 and run the 5w-40 (or GC 0w-30, which is a very "thick" 30-weight oil).

Have fun with your STi!

BTW, here are a few more STi oil anaylsis results:

A lot depends on your driving style and the ratio of /stop/go/highway/city/on/off cycle. However in all cases for that kind of car I'd stick to short OCI.

In Phoenix and driven hard... I would suggest a 10w-40 or even 15w-50 oil. Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w40 comes to mind, but no one have used or even seen it yet. Mobil 1 15w-50 is also a great oil for your use (track) and location (Phoenix, AZ).

Since Subaru recommends to change oil every 3750/3.75mo for severe or 7500/7.5mo for normal, I would say you can change every 4-6 months depending on how anal you are with the car.

I myself will be using 10w-40 in my daily driver WRX in the SF Bay Area. Have fun with the car and don't crash it (which I did to mine)...
