The only V8 that requires premium in the Mustangs is the GT500 due to the supercharger. The new 5.0 was designed for 87.

I thought I had read somewhere that the new 5.0 required premium fuel, but I guess I was wrong. That's good to hear, as that fact alone can save someone a lot of money on fuel, especially up here in Canada where we get ripped off big time on premium fuel (most places charge at least 55 cents per gallon extra compared to 87, which is already grossly overpriced, it's almost $5 a gallon right now!)

Not according to the owners manual. The BOSS and GT500 yes, but the "regular" 5.0's the owners manual says "minimum 87 octane".

actually they will allow you to run 87, but the power output is down a bit. Who would even consider it?

87 octane yields 402hp/377 tq and high test gives 412/390.

My car also needs premium for maximum power, but will run fine on regular. ?

I think if I were really truly looking at a new Mustang, I would only get the GT500.

1. I was brought up with the understanding that a Mustang should only have a V8, thanks mom.
2. I hate driving a car with an automatic. I like having 3 pedals, and the only way I wouldn't have a manual is if the car had genuine flappy paddles.
3. I have driven the new 5.0 and I dont like the manual they use. The TR-6060 in the GT500 is better IMHO, and it is made in America or Canada depending on the day.
4. Have you heard a GT500 with long tubes and an offroad X pipe with Borla Stingers?? OMG wow.
5. As for the age thing, I am 27 and don't care about gas mileage or emissions whatsoever.

Ah, to be young again. But I also do not buy my personal car with much regard for economy of operation.

That said, the newer GT500 is a very different car with the aluminum motor. Much more desirable to me with the now balanced handling over the older ones. Nice choice.

If I was gonna dream here I'd pick the new Audi R8 in maxed out V-10 trim. All n/a and pretty sweet!

Haha but in all seriousness, the Mustang your FIL bought sounds pretty cool. If I was commuting any great distance every day, 10 miles each way right now, I would definitely consider one of those.

So you really feel that the 6060 is better than the Getrag(??)?

Some think that the T56 (especially the Vette/Viper/'Terminator' versions) was/is better than the TR-6060.

What gearbox does the Boss 302, and Laguna Seca editions come with??

MT-82 same as the other 5.0's. The gearbox in my Volvo is made by Getrag best I can tell and I am not a fan of it.

Whiskey tango foxtrot????

Grow up, and get a life while you're at it.

Before jumping on the Honda band wagon and then kids, wife had a 25th anniversay 'stang with the V6, I think 99 or 98 model. I was impressed even back then with it. It would smoke the tires off at a stand still and really get moving. I don't think she ever said she wished she would have gotten the V8 instead.

The new V6 certainly packs a punch. If I had a long commute, and the car was a DD, I'd consider the V6 for gas mileage. However, for anything else, V8 it is. Nothing beats the sound, and the torquey throw-you-in-the-seat blast of a big V8.

If I was buying a sports car such as the mustang, camaro, or challeger, it would be with a V8. I'm not saying the V6's are not capable, but I like the power and sound of a V8 and can live with the reduced mileage.

My fiance has a 2007 Mustang GT with the 4.6L V8 and I love driving that car. It feels like an old school muscle car to me. I have a supercharged 2004 Monte Carlo SS and we get about the same gas mileage and I have to run premium but her car feels much more powerful and sounds much better.

I rented a 2011 V6 convertible. The car had plenty of power, in fact, I'd guess it went 0-60 in six. But, I felt it was down on low end torque, even for a 3.7L engine. Probably due to throttle by wire tuning and not engine size. It had that "nothing, nothing, nothing, Oh-boy, here we go" feel to it. I had to force a downshift to get it moving. Really, a minor complaint, as I could have shifted manually.

Still, the car was amazingly nice. Comfortable with the top down, quiet, powerful, and very responsive. I loved driving it. A true American "classic". It's not a boring Asian car, like a perfect Honda Accord or Toyota Camry, it's got soul. A few mods to personalize it and it could be major fun, even without the V8.

My 5.0L gets 27 mpg in a Suburban commute and can get 31 mpg at a steady 65 mph. Strickly in town driving can drop it to 19 mpg. Thats with the M6/3.55 Combo (Available gears are 3.31, 3.55 and 3.73 with the M6). Not bad for a car that runs 12.6 at 112 mph.

It's not all that "big" of a V-8, but it most certainly acts like one in the power/torque depatments, and can still wind out and WAIL like the 4 cam/32 valver it is!!
